Pilot forced to sleep on plane?

I also disagree with his position that "often the company doesnt want you to go to the filed alternate," which sounds more like company specific practice for his airline. 99% of the time, the alternate listed on my release makes sense and would be the practical alternate based on the reason for the alternate requirement

If I lost the blue hydraulic pump I would continue if the FO was in agreement.
If I lost blue hydraulic fluid I would return.
Also I always thought it was a rule that if you are diverting to a field not on your release that an emergency must be declared or you were breaking a reg.

So what's wrong with HDN as a diversion airport? I have no idea if it was the planned alternate or not but SkyWest goes into HDN all the time. I also don't know exactly how the scenario played out but this is how I would assume the scenario played out because I've seen it happen before. The flight is en route, the northeast arrival gate closes up and they give you a northwest arrival and you make your way up there and then that closes up and Denver is no longer accepting arrivals. Now you're on the Northwest side of Denver with less fuel than planned and not many other destinations up there. It's been a while since I've been up there but I don't remember it being particularly challenging and they obviously have the facilities to handle the flight.

We also don’t need to land with the listed reserve gas. That was an interesting conversation. Come on Mav, do some of that pilot $h1t!

You’re exercising your emergency authority as a Captain to fly to an airfield not named on your release. You don’t have to declare an emergency with ATC to do that.

If a hub, like DEN, is being affected by weather resulting in diversions, there are likely a lot of flights that are diverting. They can't all go to COS or the COS infrastructure will be overwhelmed. The diversions have to be spread out.

On diversions, I had an incident at NetJets where we flew into AVL early one morning before the tower opened. TAF said it'd be clear so no alternate filed. Had to hold for traffic and then shoot the full approach, got down to 200AGL and couldn't even see the ground directly below us. So full missed approach. I was familiar with GSP and knew it was just an hour's drive from AVL (pax was picking up kid from camp). And we were going into our 45 min reserve so I just requested the divert from ATC and sent a quick message to the company. No pushback at all. AVL tower opened a short time later and the RVR was 500.
