The Facts
OK. Here it is. The skinny. There were 2172 furloughs.
1402 or 64.5% have accepted recall (this includes Mil Leave)
640 or 29.5% have resigned, not responded, or died
130 or 6% are still on bypass
This is current as of 6/13/2007.

United announcing that it's going to hire "up to" 100 pilots in 2007 to replace the HUNDREDS that chose not to return from furlough is hardly good news.
100 pilots doesn't even come close to keeping pace with retirements!
Morale in the toilet.
Management that doesn't want to (can't) run an airline.
No replacement aircraft on order and not cleaning the ones the currently have.
A company that disregards the pilot contract at will.
Some of the lowest pay on type in the industry.
Worst customer service ratings in the airline business.
What am I missing here, why would anyone apply?

Have you heard or read what's going on at the regional level?
Pilots hired there before 9/11 have been cooling their heels for 7 years waiting to get out. Some of these pilots upgraded in 6 months and have been warming the same seat for all these years. Others missed the opportunity to upgrade and sat FO for 5 years flying with captains 5 years younger tham them and 1000 hours less, because they were interns who got hired at 500 hours in '00.. They are flying 6 legs a day in a 50 seat RJ that has 4 deferrals, including the APU or FMS at any given time. They fly 8 hours a day, 90 hours a month, and have 10-12 days off in a month if they're lucky. They get to spend lovely 30+ hour layovers in great destinations like Cedar Rapids Ia, and Oklahoma City, OK.
Others are duking it out in the Turboprop wars, flying >6 legs a day in a hot bumpy ATR or Dash or Brasilia or 1900 and never leaving driving distance of their hub.
All have been whipped, beaten, abused, and cornholed by management more times than they can count. The grievance system is virtually non-existant at this level of the industry. ASA hasn't had a contract for 5 years. Management tells us to our faces in recurrent that "anyone over 5 years should leave, because you're too expensive and tilt the pay scale too much". Feel like a valued employee yet?
To pilots in this segment of the industry, an airline like United, even as screwed up as it is seems like dying and going to heaven. The old saw about the grass being greener onthe other side of the fence always holds true.
There are tens of thousands of regional pilots who have the experience and connections to get hired at any of the legacy carrierss. Someone who flew at UAL or another legacy in the "good 'ol days" prior to 9/11 WOULD think it sucks. Someone who's been abused for the last 7 years to the point of hating their job at a regional would be very happy there. It all about perspective.
I'll wager that UAL gets 10,000 applications the first month. Unfortunately, since they're only hiring 100 pilots, the only people who will actually get the interview (much less the job) are those who stand above the crowd due to nepotism or affirmative action status. Most won't even stand a chance.

I know right before 9/11 the guy in charge of hiring was putting together a deal where a current UAL guy could recommend 1 person a year and they were guaranteed an interview as long as they met mins.
Rumor is, he is also going to be the guy in charge this time, so hopefully his plans havent changed.

I hate to say it guys but if you are a white male...............good luck!!! UAL, because of lawsuits back in the day, hire "favorably" if you are either a female, or African-American...........whether its right or wrong inst the issue, just a lot harder to get hired there if you don't fit in that category...............

UAL hasn't even started hiring yet ... it didn't take long for this crap to start.
