London to Edinburgh (spent time down there first). Nice trip. Rented a car there and used it through Oban and Inverness (used a tour company for Isle of Skye) rather than train, and turned the car in to Inverness.
You can fly from Inverness to LHR if connecting back to the states.
Id recommend a car—there is so much to see along the way and a car will add that value.
