Senator Ted Cruz, chairman of the powerful Commerce Committee, has formally asked President Donald Trump to potentially abolish mandatory retirement age requirementsas U.S. policy at the General Assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization in Montreal this week. Cruz, who also sits on the aviation panel of the committee, said in a letter to Trump that the current retirement age of 65 needlessly forces “early retirement” of thousands of highly experienced and qualified pilots every year. “America should lead on the international stage in support of raising, or even abolishing, the pilot retirement age,” Reuters quoted the letter as saying.

The International Air Transport Association, which represents almost all airlines, will formally request ICAO raise the mandatory retirement age for pilots flying internationally from 65 to 67. The rule applies to all pilots flying international routes but does not cover domestic flights although most countries, including the U.S., apply the same standards to domestic aviation. So far major aviation nations including Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand and the U.K. have backed the IATA proposal, but the U.S. has not announced a position. Trump won’t be at the meeting but both Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford will be, and whatever position they take will likely carry a lot of weight. Just last year Congress rejected a proposal to raise the age after the FAA said it needed more time to study the potential impact.

The Air Line Pilots Association is stridently opposed to the proposal, citing potential safety concerns. “The United States is the global leader in aviation safety, and we should resist any attempts to arbitrarily make changes to the regulatory framework that has helped us achieve this record,” ALPA told Reuters. “That’s why Congress rejected making a change to the pilot retirement age just last year.”
As of September 2025, about 3.2% of the legislation that Senator Ted Cruz has sponsored has become law.
This roughly translates to he is definitely due for a win! Send money now! Keep the faith! I win money beating 40 year olds at golf because I haven’t lost a step and that’s proof!

I think he is attempting to cognitively flex by trying to sound intelligent. Google the Dunning-Kruger effect. There is a lack of self awareness.

AI be like Seatbreezy, no hear what it told not to. To truly grasp a contentious, no single answer topic, you have to churn it. See what comes up from underneath. Consider all possible outcomes, anticipate. The reason DOB sunsets are necessary isn’t who deserves what. It’s for those struggling to stay fit despite their limitations. The present system is simply not configured for revision. That, In my cognitively frail opinion, needs to change 1st.

Are you the current nominee for US Ambassador to ICAO? You sound like that guy.

Sorry you're on the sideline for the ICAO confab. You're going to miss out on a bunch of wining and dining from the LEPF/EPAS geezers.

Have you heard? They're getting other old-timers to send them money for their boondoggle this week ($1000 minimum donation strongly recommended).

Gone money. Along for the ride much better investment choice.
Ambassador, no.
Posting to the Bahamas would be nice. But I hear Herschel Walker is next in line.

You are a walking advertisement for why cognitive impairment is a real thing associated with age.

It's okay if you don't have a comeback. I'll reserve you a table at Cracker Barrel and we will call it even.

This squares with the ICAO survey on pilot upper age limits: of the 193 member states, some are deemed “capable” with strong oversight systems and can certify pilots beyond 67, while “incapable” states cannot. The framework envisions a restrictive blanket limit of 67, with bilateral or regional agreements between capable states allowing no upper age limit.

The wailing and gnashing of teeth on here will be epic if age 67 comes to pass. (I'm against age 67 BTW, I'm a realist and know we as pilots have absolutely no control over how this fleshes out).
