Default NWA makes news for canceled flights

Seeing as how the NWA guys have been complaining about this for some time now, I find it hard to believe that they canceled that many flights just due to pilots calling in sick.

Or are the NWA pilots making a statement?

Lets see its the end of the month again... I bet lots of NWA pilots are hitting their 100 hours.

NWA is now accepting apps for pilots...

Pilot sick calls in the problem...right..

For the 2nd month in a row... Its an obvious pilot shortage.

the only response I've seen is that "maybe they're calling in sick because of all the hours they are flying." people don't understand that and will still blame pilots. the company running out of pilots because they're hitting their legal maximum before the end of the month people understand. and shifts blame to NWA.

But for the most part i've seen no ALPA statments at all, above or below the fold.

The article I read was in the local Dallas paper. It had both the company claim of excessive sick calls as well as a definitive statement by ALPA that the airline was undermanned and that it had been for several months.

I agree that the word is not getting out - I left Indy this morning and the NWA area was a mess. Several inbound flights CNXd, passengers being rolled to other airlines, etc. Everyone was angry, and they were angry at....those damn pilots!



And my comment about "past the fold" was to show how ALPA's position was getting buried in the press.

Unfortunatly its a double edged sword.... to the pax, the PILOTS are the airline. Its not mgts fault in their eyes... its the FACE of the airline. So.... all though the pilots are trying to make a point... one I support by the way.... they also garner some bad press at the same time...

the savy person may see through it and realize that its a management issue... but the average joe blow just sees the FACE of the airline.

ALPA needs to run a FULL PAGE response to all this in both the Wallstreet Journal, the USA Today and the three main local papers in Detroit, Minneapolis, and Memphis.

John, you listening? Or are you too busy eating at the Aero Club in DC to bother? Quit hobnobbing with rich *********s and use our funds to educate those that need educating.


ALPA just doesn't get it when it comes to defending the profession in public.

Herc man. Sick leave is no higher than last year. We are not making any point. We are out of hours, plain and simple. I'm not sure what ALPA can say to the public though. If we defend our level of sick leave it's like the prosecutor asking the defendent, 'When did you stop beating your wife?'

If it is true that the pilots are simply "timed-out" and not calling in sick, then ALPA needs to be extremely proactive in combating the perception on behalf of the entire industry, not just NWA pilots. The public sees pilots as peas in a pod. If NWA pilots are spoiled, then so are AA, DAL, CAL, SWA, etc. This is the perception of the uneducated. ALPA needs to do a much better job of communicating and advocating to the paying public to combat misconceptions that management will put out.
