SWA Capt,

Well, that was more like the post I was hoping for, I greatly appreciate the perspective and you acceptance of my poor spelling! I am definitely will and able to take the short term pain, the wife is O/B as well because she knows Air Jamaica might not be around in a few years from now. Job security is definitely an issue for us. If she is working it will be OK I suppose, but I just don't know where to hunt for a quick upgrade time kind of job. If you know anything along these lines please fill me in. Thanks for the well wishes, it's appreciated.

Ian

xkuzme1,

I had that thought too, just that Air Jamaica does not allow me to fly for hire outside of the job. Thanks anyway, the idea of flying a conventional airplane again is something I would like to do someday. I actually miss general Aviation most times.

I fly waaaay up north in piston twins. Single pilot IFR stuff. We had a 4k hr pilot come to us becuase after 2 years in the commuter, right seat, he didn't have enough pic complex time to win an interview with a major. Hmmm. They (his friends at the major) told him to get some single pilot/IFR/complex time and they'd bring him in for a talk.

I know there's a range for answers, but I'll ask anyway; What/how much time do you want to get to become "competitive" for a decent job? Each plateu that I reach reveals another, higher peak to climb. Good thing I have good boots... there's more mountain to climb.

Mike,

You gave me the best laugh I have had in ages, the whole part about sounding like educated professionals and all. I happened to notice where you were arguing back and forth with yet another person on this site, using real "professional" phrases like "WTF" and "don't give a S". lol, Practice what you preach brother, and lay off the meds.

My problem with spelling and grammar is that we all think of ourselves as intelligent highly trained professionals. I don't like to disagree but reading some of these posts makes one wonder. There was a book published years ago called, Dress for Success. The author said you should look the part. If we all want to make $250,000/year maybe we should look like wealthy professionals and maybe we should sound like educated professionals in our correspondence. The least we can do is spell correctly and use words like advise and advice correctly.

Default Dress for Success

Mike,

These days if we should Dress for Success then I suppose we should all be wearing greasy carharts. I read an article recently that said that 75% of all self made millionaires had a high school diploma or less. As for myself I have been earning much more with a tool belt on than I ever hoped to as a pilot.

My current job does not show hope for upgrade for a long time and I am wondering what is the fastest way to get myself qualified for one of the carriers listed above.

Any advise?
I see you've already had your chops busted about spelling (coming from a guy that could use a lesson or two in punctuation ), so I'll let that one slide.

As I see it, you've got conflicting goals. You want a way to get turbine PIC, but you also want to leave a job because of cummuting. Unless the perfect turbine PIC job is there in your home, you're going to need to commute anyway. The question I have is this: What are you willing to do to get the turbine PIC?

Have you considered one of the lower or middle tier freight outifts? CAT? Gemini? Atlas/Polar? etc.? Have you considered a regional outfit that operates RJs? I don't have specific, current information on any of the above, but I have spoken with people that recount personal experiences of fast upgrades. If there's a path to a faster upgrade at one of those than is available in the company where you are currently, are you willing to make the jump?

Have you looked into corporate? How about fractionals?

I realize I've asked more questions than I've answered. My point is, if you're REALLY set on getting the turbine PIC, don't close any doors, and don't skip any while you're knocking. For more ideas of places to hunt, you might find some help on Clear-and-a-million.com.

Good luck! (Oh, and for FedEx, it's only Turbine PIC - - multi is only required if it's turboprop.)

Tony,

I am definitely willing to bite the bullet financially for the PIC turbine time. I have considered everything from charter, fractional, to small cargo operators. Truth be told I am so confused that I have no idea what to do. The wife said that she will help with the loss of income, so I think we will be able to survive without starving or anything of the sort, but how does one chose in today's environment? I really have been thinking hard about FlexJet, Flight Options or NetJets. Any ideas on any of these outfits, in terms of upgrade time anyway. Thanks again, appreciate the help from everyone.

Regards,
Ian

Mike,

I honestly don't mind the rubbing, I am just playing around. Thanks for the advice though, I have a lot to consider. Cheers,
