Thoughts on Spirit Airlines

Hey guys, Just wanted to get some Major Pilots perspective on Spirit Airlines...

Im probably gonna cast my resume net in the next couple of months to see what bites...im happy at Air Wisconsin....but i wouldnt mind a change of scenery...the east coast is starting to bore the hell outta me.

Anyway just wanted to see what you guys knew, or thought of them...i know they are in contract negotiations, i just wanna make sure i dont commit to a new company to find them closing up shop and leaving pilots on the street. Thanks alot you guys!

If you're afraid of contract negotiations, or of putting your job on the line to get what you are worth as a pilot, perhaps you should consider another line of work.

You would like it better here than you would at a regional, because of our contract, not because anyone loves keeping pilots around.

I think an FO at a regional would feel very lucky to have a shot at Spirit.

Spirit Airlines

Anyone else lookin into flying for these guys? im close to the mins and have a few friends there...i know they wanna hire alot...especially with 3 new bases....i was just curious if anyone else was considering it

SharkAir 01-26-2008 06:26 PM

Already done.

Flyboy8784 01-26-2008 07:05 PM

oh yeah???? when did u apply?? did you hear anything yet?

SharkAir 01-26-2008 07:34 PM

Yeah, about a week ago, and no.

To be honest, I have very low expectations. But you know what they say about failing 100% of the time you don't try. It's kind of like how I have captain bids in despite having less than a year's seniority.

naley70b 01-26-2008 07:59 PM

Spirit had an internship program for ERAU dudes where you could go be a gate agent and a flight attendant for a couple of years and then they might give you a first officer position...i dunno seemed a little fishy to me, and i didn't much want to use my "prestigious" aviation education to go serve some fat tourists drinks....

freezingflyboy 01-26-2008 08:37 PM

Why isn't this in the Major section? I know they seem like a big regional that flies Airbii but they're considered a major.

SharkAir 01-26-2008 08:47 PM

We're blurring the line.

no gate agent or FA job for those ERAU guys...

They are already on the line (some with less than 300 hrs)

they get interviewed then thrown into ground school...

careerpilot 01-27-2008 06:36 AM

I interviewed with Spirit yesterday. I feel it is a great opportunity and I am hoping to hear something soon.

GRDHound 01-27-2008 06:45 AM

I put my application in about a week ago. Hoping to hear something soon but with no internal connections I'm not sure how long it'll take. Hey CAREERPILOT, how'd the interview go? If you could post some gouge it looks like there are some of us who could use it.

Short Bus Drive 01-27-2008 06:46 AM

Some of you guys need to look up some facts.
We are NOT a "Major", or "Legacy", we are a "national" airline.
Those ERAU "dudes" (and "Dudettes" BTW), did not have to be an FA or gate agent.
And, they are not on the line yet, as far as I know. But then again I've been off for a month. And still have another half to go.
Carreer pilot, good luck. The people you'll work with are great ( for the most part). The people you work FOR, well, it's managment.
The new union leaders coming on will hopefully change some things, and get this contract done!
I hope you like SJU!

careerpilot 01-27-2008 07:05 AM

I am already planning on SJU if I get hired. I am thinking because of all the hiring that I won't have to do too much time down there. I was also told that Spirit is heading down to SJU to recruit Pilots. I know that Eagle has a lot of pilots who reside down there and would love this new opportunity.

www.aviationinterviews.com has a gouge for every airline you can imagine.

So no info then?

careerpilot 01-27-2008 08:24 AM

My experience was as advertised on aviationinterviews.com. The website offers free membership. I don't really have anything to add.

Career,

How long ago did you apply? I turned in the long application in the middle of Dec and haven't heard back from them yet.

yeah, but I dunno being based is SJU doesn't sound to appealing. I spoke with an XJT F/O that just got hired there, so I wouldn't doubt if they picked up some more regional F/Os in the future. I would def go if I got hired, but would not look forward to the EWR-SJU commute..............

Job Fair in DFW

spoke to a friend who was at the Airinc job fair in DFW. Line was out the door for NK...

I'm an XJT FO who was hired recently; start class in a couple of weeks and yes I consider myself very lucky. (Especially with the state of uncertainty at XE.)
SJU for new hires for sure but not for long. Only about 25-30 fo's will be based there initially and considering they are hiring 150 plus this year you wont have to stay long.
In addition I spoke with the CP and he emphasized that they are looking for locals to staff SJU and will be recruiting down there.
Do I think I'll see LGA in the near future? Probably not, but the commute to FLL isnt too bad.

Pilotpip 01-27-2008 05:12 PM

SJU sounds much more appealing to me than EWR Saab. To each their own :)

Which is all the more perplexing why the ERAU program exists.

To all whom have interviewed with Spirit in the past few months, just curious how long you waited for an interview and whether or not you had any internal recs... Thanks

I did have a couple of internal rec's and I waited about 2 weeks till I got the call.

rhinoflight 01-28-2008 10:53 AM

A few of you are reffering to regional FO's as lucky to get a spot or even an interview. Do you think that a Corporate Jet FO with over 3000 hours is a step down, or up from a RJ Radio boy with 2000 hours?

What's the difference? I don't see one.

Wow, you make it seem like being a corporate jet fo is better than being a regional airline fo....just out of curiosity how do mesure that? Is it because the 6-10 folks you carry are more important than the 19 to 70 that the regional folks carry.....I did the corporate gig for a while before switching over to the regional world. Both jobs are equally crucial to the safety of flight.

taylorjets 01-28-2008 09:54 PM

121 experience desired. I guess your question is answered. Good luck from an ex RJ radio boy.

I thinking he likes the Caliente Red stuff.

Still confused on: Is it enviromental green or palm tree green.... Ben has me scratching my head on that one. Typical NK, change it after you learn something new;)

Good luck to anyone wanting to get on..........

You are right. Perhaps I should change. This way I can hate my life, occupation, co workers and everything else. After all, staying positive during a transitional period is for the birds.

easy taylor......take a long draw of that Kool-Aid and settle into what ever you do over in HQ......:) GOM's, COM's, and other mans. etc....?

Can't speak for all NKer's but I love life/family, truely enjoy my profession, like my co-workers(fellow pilots and FA's) and most everything else....

Not all of us believe everything that spews out of Miramar.

Have a great day Bud:D Maybe I'll run into you over in the new crew lounge?
