SWA post 1stq PROFIT!

SWA profit margin has not deteriorated.
2003 $298 million
2004 $313 million
2005 $548 million
2006 $499 million (GAAP accounting)
2007 $645 million
Glad I didn't give any concessions in pay, we're doing quite well. Envy brings out the worst in people.
Guess it's a luxury to have management that has foresight instead of taking whatever cost measures they can out against labor.

You're real kewl, NOT!!!
Everywhere we fly I carry the local currency, speak the language, and I'm no more than 3 time zones away from home.
The minute I stepped on the property I was provided with health insurance and a wage that I could live on without relying on food stamps.
I have a choice to fly out of BWI,MCO,HOU,DAL,MDW,LAS,OAK, and PHX.
No EWR for me, been there done that.
Your mighty triple seven pays $10 less than our little 73.
30+ years of profits, never filed chapter 11.
You guys might have an RJ that flys to Paris,TX, but we don't serve that market, DUDE

I think it's pretty pointless to compare a legacy to LCC these days. They are 2 totally different animals, with different route structure, different marketing strategies, different kind of employees.
Some pilots like to stay close to home, doing 4-5 legs, get paid a lot, then more power to you. Some like to see the world, enjoy the scenery, benefits, then there's another venue. No need to compare pay scales or overnights. Each airline has its ups and downs, and if SW continues to make money with good mgmt, more power to them. I think we (legacy) can learn a lot from the successful LCCs, i.e. SW, AAI and such.

True, ignore works, but my opinion is that as a moderator he should take action against the offender rather than inconvenience everyone else. My opinion only, mind you, but I was certainly taken to the woodshed and my post deleted pretty quickly when I referred to him as "lacking intelligence and reason." This board is quickly becoming flightinfo.com.

Agreed. Hopefully that happens, but until then...

If you see a post as flamebait, you need to report it. Period.
"This board is quickly becoming flightinfo.com"
Only YOU can keep that from happening. A) by not responding in kind or throwing insults. B) by reporting the post so ALL the mods and admins can see it. I'm the last one that wants to see this site be like flightinfo, but we need your help and cooperation.

Fair enough - the problem is that when what really needs to be done is to call out an individual like the prolific ewrbasedpilot, you can't use an adjective like stupid because it is insulting. Meanwhile, the only method we have to shovel it back over the fence is to insult the company he works for and the rest of the pilots there. My apologies for that, Continental pilots, there is "one of them" everywhere.
How exactly do we report a post to an administrator?
Oops...nevermind I just found the little triangle at the bottom left corner of each post.

I read somewhere that SWA has in 2009 has 50% of their fuel hedged at $51 a barrel. Compared to Alaska hedging at $80 a barrel (and their the second best!). That gives SWA a huge huge advantage considering fuel in 2009 could be 120-140 a barrel. Those airlines with little or no hege will have a much more difficult time.

NEW YORK, April 17 (Reuters) - Southwest Airlines Co (LUV.N: Quote, Profile, Research) on Thursday posted lower first-quarter earnings as a weak U.S. economy and record fuel costs took their toll on the leading U.S. discount carrier.
Quarterly net profit for Southwest was $34 million, or 5 cents per share, down from $93 million, or 12 cents per share, in the same period last year. (Reporting by Mark McSherry; editing by Mark Porter)
