oh yeah, let's just go against our own principles of what is just and steal it by bullying every small country that has an elected president with whom we don't agree. While we're at it, let's further erode the last shred of support we have from other countries with our efforts in the Middle East. Yeah, grrrrreat idea!

Do you know why Europe taxes fuel more than we do? To encourage people to drive more fuel efficient cars. Here we use the CAFE standards and taxes.
Next time you are over there look at the size of cars they drive. Last model years BMW 3 series is a large car to them. Diesel fuel costs marginally more over there than here, why is that? Diesel engines are more efficient, last longer, and get better economy. The government taxes them less to encourage people to buy them. I think Europe is around 50% diesel power on private cars.
The days of large vehicles (SUV's, Crown Vic's, Hummers) is coming to an uneconomically viable end. Too much weight to haul around and get affordable fuel economy.
Don't get me wrong, I like hot rods / sports car as much if not more than the next guy but if you can't afford to own one then it's onto something you can afford.

While there may be an element of truth to your statement, just watch what happens to the price of oil when Al Qaeda strikes again.
Face it, our economy is based on oil. It drives the price of almost everything.
As for United...what date of hire (original DOH) would the junior pilot have if 1641 pilots are chopped off the bottom of the list?

We have already witnessed management's greed and self interest. Now we will have to see how much the pilot group is willing to sacrifice to help each other. I did some rough numbers and my guesstimate is if everyone flew just 10 to 15 hours a month less, it would prevent most, if not all, furloughs. It would cost the company roughly 10 to 15 million a year for the continued benefits of those not furloughed but that number is a drop in the corporate bucket. Of course that might hurt Tilton's precious bonus that I'm certain he is going to give himself for all his good work
The problem is that reserves on the 737/320 are routinely flown 95 hours regardless of what they would like to fly. So obviously the company has to be willing to lower block hours but the union also has to fight for the adjustmet. Whether that happens will be largely dependent on how willing everyone is to sacrifice for the good of the whole group. Junior and Senior manning is so commonplace that it makes me very skeptical.
The other unknown factor is how many leaves of absences will be awarded and requested. Too many variables to really figure it all out just now.
I thought it was quite revealing that CAL's powers that be are taking a pay cut and actually talked about trying to come up with creative alternatives to furloughs. No such talk at United. In fact, our union admitted that the company did not even discuss any of this with them and that management hadn't even prepared any numbers yet. That speaks volumes to me.

And I suppose Stalin was a "firm but fair" leader, right? You may want to stop placing faith in leftist revisionist history books, the daily kos, and the new york times.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and say you probably don't have any idea what you're talking about.
Votes for Bush: 50,456,169
Votes for Gore: 50,996,116
540,000 more votes for Gore than Bush. A little more than half a million.
Those are facts my friend.

Don't worry, you'll have your chance at redemption soon. By redemption, I mean an underqualified, president running the country further into the ground.

McCain is Bush Lite. We don't need 4 more years of that.
I'm no Obama fan, but i'm willing to try anything else at this point.

You have no idea who I'm voting for nor what party, if any, I claim to be affiliated with. Perhaps you should run for president or nominate someone "qualified". Whether it was 8 years ago or not, it violates the principles of a democracy. It's going to take a long time to recover from this mess. Furthermore, I'm not sure if I'll get my chance at redemption since popular vote means nothing.
