Jumpseat Problems
What are some options if the CASS system is down and the gate agent says you can't go. I asked if the captain could get me on without being CASS approved and the gate agent told me the captain can not bypass the requirement. I was not going to sit in the cockpit, there were cabin seats open. I asked if there was a number they could call and the agents told me there was not enough time, calling the number takes close to 30 minutes they said. Has this happened to anyone else before?

Isn't Alaska the only domestic airline that won't allow you a cabin seat without CASS?
I'd make sure to speak with your Jumpseat coordinator and get the Agent's name/emp. number if possible. They must let you speak with the Captain, always.

when i first started with big sky we didnt even have CASS. i would just walk up and tell them that i needed a cabin j/s. so long as your airline has an agreement with the airline youre trying to jump on it shouldnt be a problem.
with that said, so much depends on the person at the gate that you are dealing with. they sometimes have no clue about j/s'ing without CASS so you could be in for a big headache trying to work with them to get things all sorted out and get yourself on board.

The company I work for is not CASS but we are allowed to ride on Alaska in the cabin.

CASS is exactly what it is ...Cockpit Access Security System. There is no requirement to clear you with CASS unless you need to actually occupy the JS.
Had the same exact thing happen to me, played it cool but insisted that I speak with the Captain and rode in the back no problem. Sounds like yet another guy screwed by a gate agent that doesn't know the rules, or worse thinks that they know them all and are wrong!

Herein lies the problem, agents don't understand that CASS is for cockpit access only. If CASS is down for whatever reason, pilots are getting denied a cabin seat. It's true Alaska/Horizon will not allow a cabin seat if denied in CASS (at least it used to be that way), but if you are not a CASS carrier you will get a cabin seat, because the system is not seeking a CASS reply.....thus no "denied" return. Agents have assumed control over the jumpseat and it has usurped the captains authority granted in FAR 121.547........Having said that a captain cannot override a CASS denial for a cockpit jumpseat......dems da rules.

I have had this problem several times through U.S. Airways as well. If there are seats available, the Gate Agent just puts me in as a non-rev. I don't see why other carriers wouldn't be able to do that.
