Not to be a pollyanna, but the bulk of the reported loss (1.1 billion) was a non-cash charge related to the tanking of the share price. Excluding this one-time charge, Delta actually reported a profit beyond Wall Street's projections and revenue came in above expectations as well. Given the current economic climate, I'll take these results...

The Atlanta-based company also said it expects to achieve $2 billion in cost savings by 2012 from its acquisition of Northwest Airlines Corp. That is double what it estimated when it announced the deal on April 14.

you are right that this is alarming for Delta. I am quite worried about the trend. A 1.2 Billion loss is a LOSS - no matter what spin the company puts on it. However, the article stated that Delta plans on spending only 600 MILLION as compared to 1 BILLION on the integration (a savings of 400 MILLION).
