3 Airports Opening New Runways
The third runway at SeaTac underwent a long and arduous battle before coming into existence. It also cost $1 billion, but I'm glad to see it and hope it will help with congestion. Some good news in the middle of what seems like all bad news all the time.
From Associated Press:
CHICAGO - Alarm in the aviation industry over a projected 10 percent drop in domestic flights this winter hasn't derailed plans to open multimillion-dollar runways at three U.S. airports Thursday.
Despite global economic woes that have fewer people taking to the skies, airport officials in all three cities are heralding the new capacity as crucial to alleviating congestion and delays, especially in the long term.
They say that's well worth the more than $450 million spent on the runway at Chicago's O'Hare International; the approximately $350 million spent at Dulles International, just outside of Washington, D.C.; and the more than $1 billion for Seattle-Tacoma International.

I guess there are a lot of factors that go into it.

This is from KING5. Basically, it took 15 years, lots of court battles, and environmental issues. I don't know what CAT III means, and apparently the reporter doesn't either because she makes no mention of it.

Ah, it says it right there in the article... "Test runs on the third runway using a computerized auto landing system have warmed up the tarmac. " That'd be a Category 3 approach (CAT III). I don't know how much it costs to get one running, but the ground equipment must be expensive, and the testing that goes into it must cost a pretty penny.

I seem to remember they had to dynamite the holdouts for the new SEATAC runway off their property too. There's a few bucks there.
I remember that there used to be a great viewing sight (a park actually designed for the purpose) on the West side that was sacrificed.
Back in the old days when you didn't have to get to the airport 16 days before departure, I used to grab some take-out, sit at the park and watch the comings and goings before catching my flight back home.
Hope it helps out once the weather turns sour.

best part of the new runway in IAD today was all the Mesa guys wanting to land on it. there's 1 taxiway leading back to the rest of the airport right now, at the south end of the runway, and we were landing north.
guys were all over each other to land on a piece of pavement, and then taxi 15 minutes back without getting any pay for it...
