OK, so what happened?

i've been unable to access the forum for over a month. while some of you rejoice, others missed me. now, i requested a password reset over and over this past month. while the password was reset, for some reason the new password would never show up and e-mail after e-mail to the forum administrator went unanswered. i finally had to create a new screen name to gain access.

so, did the forum admin want me off or was all this just a big mistake? you may recall i offered to leave the forum if a majority wanted me off, i extend the same offer to the guys who run the forum.

i just want a little explanation, that's all.

LAfrequentflyer 04-10-2006 01:42 PM

Welcome back...Honestly, I thought you had taken a break to finish the book and were preparing to go on the talk show circuit...

:D

I was wondering what happened...glad your back.

Kill Bill, II 04-10-2006 02:18 PM

thank you. actually, i finished the plotting of the book which was no mean feat. i estimate about a month more of actual writing before it's done.

and i really missed you guys. all of a sudden, about 6 weeks ago, i couldn't get access to the site. it wouldn't load, kind of like a slow dial-up connection. then when i finally got back, my logon wouldn't work. so i sent repeated messages to the admin. no dice.

anyway, here i am, volume 2. :)

OldAg84 04-10-2006 02:29 PM

I thought you mighta been hit by the Internet Mafia "swimmin wit da 404's" as it were.

Surely the real Bill couldn't have taken a month to figure out how to "resurrect" himself.

In any case, welcome back. I enjoy your posts (mostly).

JMT21 04-10-2006 02:48 PM

You know how it is. Some guys took a secret ballot and decided they wanted you set back to 'New Hire' status. They figured knocking someone off the seniority list gave them more horsepower. :D

It sounds like you got the "Miserable User" treatment. Go ask the guys on FlightInfo.com how that works.

Welcome back KB.. How is the ol' 737 flying?

Kill Bill, II 04-11-2006 11:14 AM

thanks, guys. i missed all of you, i truly did. i kept hoping it would work out and i'd get the keys to the kingdom again, etc but no response from the admins.

actually, i crunched a disc pulling my kit bag out of the 737 in early march and now i get a nice surgery with titanium screws, plastic rods, etc, and will be out about 6 months. fun. but i'll finish my novel.

hmmm--not familiar with this. i know what it sounds like but i'd like to not believe anyone here would do that without saying something to me.

Miserable User - - it's a status that can be assigned to a user in vBulletin that makes the bulletin board software behave as if his computer or internet connection are not working properly. Once you sign on, it simply "hangs" on a page as if it won't load.

Can't log on, can't read posts, can't send PMs, can't read PMs - - can't cause trouble. It was the wide use of this feature, along with equally stupid management tactics to try to shut people up, that led to a dramatic exodus from FlightInfo some months ago. I'd hate to think anyone here was using the feature.

TonyC don't pull legs. FI did use the "miserable user" feature. One of their less than intelligent moderators accidentally disclosed the presence of said feature.

BTW, does anyone know why the two mods on clear and a million are also mods on FI?

slybolt

Kill Bill, II 04-11-2006 06:12 PM

well, if there is such a thing, it sounds exactly like what i experienced.

any admin or moderator care to comment?

Actually it was an administrator who unwittingly granted access to a certain group of users whom he attempted to hush by placing them in "Paroled" status. They couldn't access their own avatars or signatures, but they could access the moderators only forum, where the Miserable User status had been discussed.

Ironic, no?

Yes, the two moderators on Clear-and-a-million are also moderators on FlightInfo. Since CaaM is for the most part self-moderating, they have little work to do there.

Hi KB, II -

I just had this thread forwarded, please check your PM for a phone number so we can chat if you'd like.

Cheers,

You're not the only victim of arbitrary censorship.

Kill Bill, II 04-12-2006 06:21 AM

well, after multiple e-mails went unanswered, i finally got a PM from HSLD who confirms that i was, indeed, a "miserable user" and got treated accordingly.

it's their board and they can certainly do what they want with it. i just think it's chicken**** the way they went about it.

i'm not sure i even want to post here anymore under the present circumstances. if i'm removed from the board or if i decide to just go away, i want all of you to know how much i enjoyed the banter, even those i ripped.

so, i guess we'll see what we'll see.

Flea Bite 04-12-2006 07:21 AM

I, for one, can see why you were labeled a Miserable User, Kill Bill.

Kill Bill, II 04-12-2006 07:34 AM

wow. i'm hurt. just kidding.

appropriate name for you, though.

Banter is all it was...there shouldn't be any shame in telling it as it is. I have enjoyed all of your posts (you really have a way with words:D) and hope you will continue to post these boards.

That's kind of a stretch, here is what I said in the PM:

Howdy,

I just had this thread forwarded and I'm trying to determine what's up. I see why you were benched on the other user name and would happy to talk with you about it.

I'll stand behind the decision to pull your user access, but I'm curious why you weren't contacted about any issue the site had with your posts - obviously we dropped the ball there..

I'm in Asia this week so I'd ask that you leave a voice mail at: and leave your contact number - I'll call you back from the road. I see you're in the central timezone, so please let me know if there is another zone to consider to contact you (and leave the hours you prefer).

I'll look forward to talking with you and keep in mind there isn't a cabal against you.
I'm more than happy to discuss any problem we have (and why), but I prefer to chat with you via phone. I'm on the backside of the clock at the moment and will call as soon as I sync the times. Of course if you prefer not to visit by phone and you just want to rant about the "injustice" on the forum that's fine too.

All the best.

Kill Bill, II 04-12-2006 12:51 PM

why would i waste my breath ranting about "injustice" on your forum? you run it and you can make whatever rules you want. i challenge you to show me ONE post where i've "ranted" about the "injustice" of it all. i worked my way back here only to find that i had been stabbed in the back. until TonyC clued me in, i had no idea there was such a thing as a "miserable user". when i asked you about the multiple e-mails i've sent (i have all copies) you say you "dropped the ball". one ignored e-mail is dropping the ball. a dozen or so ignored e-mails is someting else entirely.

you don't want me on your board? fine by me. but at least be a man about it and do it the right way, not behind my back.

i don't have any interest in discussing anything with you on the phone as this board isn't on my priority list today or any other day. it was simply a place to hang out for 30 mins or so now and then and see what the daily outrage was. oh, i'll admit there was fun in putting the ignorant, the management wannabes, and the l. ron neeleman worshippers in their respective places but i can certainly channel that energy into my novel to much better result.

so, if you're going to ban me, do it here in the open so the rest of the membership can see it. you can explain your actions to them; i don't need an explanation. the fact that there is such a thing as a "miserable user" setting where you can hide behind fake website problems instead of telling someone he's banned because [fill in the blank] is enough of an explanation for me.

sky--we're opposite sides of the same coin.

i may not be able to unleash my wrath on the newbies anymore. sad, really. just have to leave it to drew! :)

Boneman 04-12-2006 01:59 PM

I see this as a serious problem. If someone be bad why not just tell them instead of locking them out and making up stories about server problems and such? I don't run a Forum so I don't know all the ins and outs. Maybe it's too much troble to police everyone and much easier to just ZAP 'em. Or maybe you have some overzealous "Forum Police." Whatever. It just seems to me to be a bit juvenile to just banish someone without warning even if there is cause. Rant over.
