Default What makes a carrier a Legacy

Just checked out APC main site for the first time in a long time and notice that Alaska and Hawaiian are now considered to be Legacy carriers. Can anyone explain how they classify who is a Legacy and who is a Major?

If your CEO can beat the Legend of Zelda...LOL...man I don't know that is a good question? I think is determined by your revenue...I could be wrong.

A Legacy carrier is an Air Line that operated pre deregulation, 1978

I do know that Regional, major, and Legacy carriers are classified by total revenue, but I'm not sure of the total numbers!

Here at APC, that is the definition used. It's pretty hollow though...not much remaining of that distinction but the title.

I think the other pax categories are based on revenue.

Lots of airlines operated prior to de-regulation, but legacy airlines operated a hub-to-hub route structure in interstate service prior to de-regulation. Most people would recognize the "big six": American, Delta, Northwest, USAir, United, and Continental. However, Hawaiian and Alaska also fit this definition, so we added them for consistency.

The last five years aside, legacy carriers have historically had "mature contracts" meaning that there had been decades worth of contract negotiations that in helped define industry standard. Because APC tracks pilot pay and benefits, the Legacy category was notable from a pilot contract perspective of comparing "mature" contracts.

A fact for you aviation nerds out there.

Hawaiian Airlines is the oldest certificated passenger and freight carrier in the US. Certificate #005 and #001 respectively. It began operations in 1929.

If an airline has more people as retirees than they do as active workers, if they cannot keep paying medical benefits, if the latest A/C on their fleet was received in the 20th. century, all their heavy checks are done in China and management keeps saying that they need concessions because of the increase fuel costs (although fuel prices are dropping) then it is a legacy carrier
