US owners of VA selling out...WSJ article
#11
Is VA really up to a few thousand jobs? The new bailout from the feds had many provisions, among others, regarding that any company that gets federal funding must not employ foreigners at the expense of Americans. There is a lot of pressure from the Hill to protect American companies employing American jobs. The political clout of VA on Capital Hill is not the same as the multi-billion dollar majors flying to all 50 states whose constituents are employees of those majors. VA only goes to a handful of states and employs hundreds but not thousands of jobs.

It certainly cannot hurt to write to your representatives. Getting the word out about their foreign ownership deal falling apart should generate some concern. They are a non-union carrier owned by foreign nationals operating into the busiest and most lucrative markets in the U.S. I don't mean to sound alarmist, but this sure sets a dangerous precedent if it is allowed to continue.

We are a US company, hiring only people with right to work in the US under the RLA. Same as any other DOT/FAR 121 airline.
Yes, our political footprint is smaller than say DL/NW, but we are headquartered in the district represented by the Speaker of the House.
Who said anything about federal funding?

I wasn't implying you were receiving federal funding only that the sentiment right now on the Hill is protecting US corporations. If you are no longer a US owned company, I don't see support for you. Even if you are from the Speaker's district.

If VA were shut down by the government, many of those 1500 jobs lost would be offset by other airlines either adding capacity to pick up the slack, or at least not cutting capacity as much as they are currently planning. The saved jobs probably have better compensation packages and work rules than the jobs lost at VA. Shutting them down to comply with the law would certainly not result in a net loss of 1500 jobs.

About 1500 jobs right now.

But I have always wondered...does VA employ more than their fair share of green card holders?
It is illegal to discriminate against a green-card holder in hiring. However...there is no law that says you cannot discriminate against citizens, and preferentially hire green-card (or H1B visa holders). I have seen this before in general aviation. H1B was especially desirable because they were essentially indentured servants...if they quit, their visa was forfeit and they could be deported.
Not flame, serious question.

All RB has to do is guarentee a rate of return on investment, doesn't matter who the placeholder may be as long as it is within the law, that is my bet. Watch what happens, remember this is a smaller part of something larger.

Serious answer. The overwhelming majority are native born Americans. Yes, there are some green card pilots, but no more or less than my last company. We hired ATA, Aloha, Spirit, USAir (E & W), UAL, jetBlue, Indy, Skywest, Mesa, World, Maxjet, ASA, Comair, AA, Delta, and I'm sure some from overseas and a few I most likely missed.
