Default Furlough Assistance

Does any airline besides CAL have a union driven Furlough Assistance fund in place?

Also, are there any airlines with voluntary funds in place to assist furloughees?

I've been told that Delta, Airtran, United and AA all have voluntary funds - any truth to that?

Thanks!

The airline would never set up a fund like that. I don’t know but I would guess the Pilot Union would probably have a furlough Assistance fund.

Let me clarify - I'd like to know: has any airline pilot group, independent of the union, set up a voluntary furlough assistance fund. I'm cognizant of the fact that airline management would take no such action.

World has done it in the past and something is being discussed for the 23 about to be furloughed.

From personal experience...Delta provided non-rev travel benefits to me throughout and for my family for a period of time (I think it was 12 months). DAL also kept my clock ticking towards seniority, pay, benefits, etc, throughout (which ended up being 6 years). DAL also aggressively pursued placing furloughed pilots into non-furloughed staff positions.

Through DALPA, DAL pilots provided medical/dental benefits until we could find/afford other alternatives.

Being furloughed sucks. IMHO, DAL made it as manageable as possible.

Credit for time served on furlough was a contractual item. It was not given by management to assist furloughed pilots. It was a hard fought contract item. Delta was the first airline to achieve this and most still don't have it. It created a larger pay raise for many NWA pilots with the merger by changing their year group for pay. It allowed furlough pilots to come back to higher pay rates at Delta.

Is this provided through regular union dues?

No - it was an assessment which was voted on by the whole pilot group. Seems that we voted on it about every other year, or something like that. Passed every time. The furloughee also had to certify that he was not eligible to receive medical care elsewhere. As most got jobs other places, over time this assessment amount kept going down.

I'll be glad to pay it again, should the need arise.

At Spirit, there was a special assessment to pay the medical for those on furlough. I think it was about 45/month for 4 months.
