Default CAL severe turbulence encounter!

So anyone here know as to what caused the bumps that led to an emergency landing at KMIA when original destination was KIAH? Could it have been poor weather along the route. Just curious if anyone heard of this. Time of occurence was around 5am enroute from Rio.

A passenger interviewed on Fox News stated that the weather was clear (he even called it CAT), the crew had announced that they would be flying through an area of turbulence, and many of the passengers had disregarded the seat belt sign and were walking around (supposedly this passenger interviewed was sitting next to an airline pilot).

For those who regularly fly "deep South America", turbulence encounters along the ITZ are not uncommon, although "severe turbulence" is not necessarily common place. A diversion to MIA was, in my view, a good decision with the number of seriously injured people on board. I hope there aren't any second guessers who would advocate continuing on to IAH.

Yes, we've heard of it and the occurance was at approximately 04:30 AM EDT.

We only have Boeings at CAL.

I'm glad the seatbelt sign was reportedly on. Who knows how many were needlessly injured for ignoring basic common sense.

Let the frivolous lawsuits and 'expert' commentary on Fox news begin.

Nice job to the crew on a successful divert!

This floors me. The passengers get a "3 hour delay and YOU make the call to the crew to let you off" law, yet a law that has been in effect FOREVER in 121, 91, 135 yadda yadda yadda NEVER gets followed. Oh wait, here it is...121.OUR REGULATIONS ARE RECOMMEDATIONS ONLY FOR PASSENGERS. And all this time I thought they were requirements.

Those Houston ambulance chasers beg to differ. Now they have to hop on Continental to MIA in order to sue Continental.

All kidding aside, I can't see how the crew could done any better. They landed at the closest US international airport where they knew the injured passengers could be taken off of the plane and to the nearest hospital. From the amount of information I've read, job very well done.
