I agree with you. But what happens when the US opens up to foriegn carriers (it will) and VA and Virgina-Atlantic and V Australia, etc start linking flights together? Then UAL either has to improve or die.Originally Posted by tsquare
I highly doubt that. The VA product is very simple as in domestic only (or not much international if they do any) UAL is truly a global carrier. It costs a lot more to fly from Chicago to Sydney than it does from SFO to New York. And... that asset (a 747) can only be used once a day in doing so. So their costs are inherently higher.. and always will be than those of VA. It doesn't matter whether you have TVs in every seat with free porn and hooters girls serving drinks on flights to Las Vegas, if UAL charged $5 less than you, they will get the business. But it costs more to maintain their fleet than it does VA, because they need scads more spare parts. And... a 747 captain SHOULD make more money than a baby bus driver.. sorry, and if you disagree with that, then you ARE part of the problem in this industry. But the point is that to compare UAL and VA is comparing apples to bowling balls. they are both round, but that is where the similarity ends. You both fly airplanes, but you don't really do much with yours... Rant over, take your best shot.
5 years ago friends of mine in the auto industry were saying GM was going down. Others said no way. Too big. Remember Bethlehem steel? Now look, GM in BK and if Obama didn't save them, there would be no more GM. Even still, Pontiac Gone; Saturn Gone; Oldsmobile Gone; Saab Gone; Hummer Gone ... (Okay sold in some cases) but the fact is that UAL is going to get hurt badly.
Sure VA pays less... NOW. But what happens down the road?
Anyway, I am not happy about the way the aviation business has gone. Why would I be, I get paid to fly and today I get paid less to fly. But at the end of the day the world is flattening out and we all need to lookk for the best future not the best past.
