If you go:

Take DEET. The strong stuff, not the wussie stuff you get at "Outdoor City". Consider prophalactic malarial meds. Depending on where you go, you may need a Yellow Fever vaccination, which MAY make you ill on it's own, and is not recommended for older folks..

Wear long sleeves. SLATHER the bug repellant on.

Malaria or yellow fever is no joke. You DO. NOT. WANT.

The only BIG cat you will see is the lion. IF you are lucky you may see a cheetah. Tigers are on the other continents. Also, check it out.. big cats don't have 'cat eyes'.

But you will see elephant, giraffe (two types), zebra (two types) and hippos. The amazing thing is there are no carcasses littering the land. The lions fell a zebra. Munch munch. Then comes the hyena, then the jackals, fox and on.. before long the buzzards show up and after that the only thing left is a very white skull and some vertebrae. And the ants and termites clean that up.

In recent years there has been a lot of violence with lots of guns coming up from other countries.

We had a great time but it was back a long time ago.

If you want a great dining experience...go to "Carnivores" just outside the city. Its a short cab ride and well worth it. They cook every imaginable meat and serve some incredible sauces to go along. In addition to beef, they offer wildebeest, giraffe, crocodile, gnu, etc. Its an incredible atmosphere with these Kenyan dudes walking around with freshly cooked stuff on skewers which they then lop off onto your plate. Awesome stuff. Also, the bar is jumpin' with a lot of Euro folks and great music. Its outside and adjacent to the restaurant.

The hotels in Nairobi are very nice and have pretty decent security. The threat lies in the ride from the airport to the nice hotel area and the downtown vicinity immediately adjacent to the hotels. In my experience, I felt very safe in the hotels and doing the cab thing. Walking around, especially at night, was not a good idea.

Jomo Kenyatta International (HKJK) is used by BA, Emirates and Air France. BA stopped flying there for 50+ days in 2003 due to airport security issues and the porous border situations. After a $1 million infusion of cash/grant from the USA for updated screening machinery, BA resumed flights, but it was very interesting.

There are no hotels near the airport which sits about 16km south east of Nairobi ajacent to the Nairobi Game Park. Nairobi was the second most dangerous city in the world to live in (after Bogota) prior to 2002 and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Baghdad and Al Nasiriah have those distinctions now.

Many crews have stayed at the Nairobi Hilton and the Intercontinental. Late night arrival rides into town are very dangerous. Downtown Nairobi is dangerous at all times, but especially after dark.
