Ding ding, we have a winner!
United mainline cannot grow. They are simply rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. When recently asked on a conference call if United would add any more airframes to their fleet between now and the expected(cough) arrival of new aircraft in 2016, the UAL CFO said....NO. When the weegie board allows United to add a route like Africa, they are cancelling something else to free up the aircraft.
Some have said the CAL pilots should leverage their scope language to achieve a leading contract. Well, a 30% pay raise won't benefit you when you are either furloughed or frozen in your seat for the next 10 years because "your" flying is being outsourced. Don't believe me? Ask a United pilot.
It's time to get smart and work together amongst the different pilot groups. The airlines certainly are. Look for yourself. AIR Conference - Airline Industrial Relations Conference

So when a UA CFO speaks you believe her?

And then the next week Tilton said he is seeking bids for 100 seat aircraft to order....go figure. There is NOTHING that is preventing growth....when they want to ....they will.

In the late 90's UAL management said the 727's and 737-200's were their recession aircraft. The bubble burst, Sept. 11th, and both fleets were parked. The previous CFO outlined 150 airplanes that UAL could easily park. Gas prices go up and the guppy fleet was parked. I have seen nothing from this management that leads me to believe they want to grow the mainline. Even the current "letter of intent" for the 787/A-350 purchase is a reduction in capacity that will begin in 2016.
Do I believe the CFO? I could care less. Their past practices have shown they only know how to revenue share, outsource, furlough, park airframes, burn furniture, and reap huge salaries. How to buy their own planes, employ them on profitable routes, and motivate their employees has yet to be demonstrated.

To any United employee, growth means new aircraft, new destinations, and more jobs for United mainline. To Glenn Tilton, I would imagine the word growth means any vehicle through which revenue can be increased. It might be United mainline, but it could also be via a Star Alliance airline, Express, or an alter ego carrier. Why would anyone want to risk capital expenditures and be locked in with new aircraft, when revenue sharing allows the flexibility of ever changing contracts and the ability of responding to the marketplace when conditions dictate. Essentially United could become a shell company or ticket broker if you will.
Yes, they did announce the RFP for short haul aircraft. They are even considering a plane that is still on the drawing board. I will believe an airplane order when I am physically sitting in the plane. Remember, forty firm A320 type order were cancelled. A couple hundred business jet orders were scrubbed. Also remember, it is contract silly season. Apparently United management believes that carrot they are dangling is long and shiny.

UAL guys/gals.....
It had been talked about recently that Glenn has more or less taken a 'backseat' so to speak, and Tague has been doing more of the 'talking'/revival to the employee groups. Is that how things are percieved, or just business as usual with Glenn sitting steady in the big chair leading the charge??

Yes, when United wants to grow they will. However, in Glenn Tilton's world as a wordsmyth, we need to define the word "growth."

Truth and that is how it is perceived by the pilot group.
