Default New Alaska Base

Alaska announces a PDX base. No recalls yet...

From an ALPA update...

Management Posts Bid 2010-06, Creating a PDX Base

Management today posted Bid 2010-06, which, among other things, establishes a Portland base with 81 captain and 77 first officer positions. Additionally, it adds 19 captain and 22 first officer positions in Anchorage. There is, at the same time, a reduction of 90 Captains and 91 First Officers from Seattle and five captains from Los Angeles.

While this bid contains 13 currently unfilled positions, these open positions are not for furlough recalls. Management has forecast these open positions will be filled by pilots returning from leaves of absence.

Bid 2010-06 closes on Monday, February 15, at 1700 Seattle time, with a June 1, 2010, bid effective date.

The opening of a Portland base is a key initiative for the company for the coming year and is independent of the success or failure of the ongoing ETOPS discussions. As we have said, regardless of what management chooses to do with respect to staffing, we remain committed to working at the bargaining table to reach an agreement on a Seattle ETOPS base that protects the long-term interests of this pilot group.

This certainly seems like a positive step (quasi expansion). I hope it isn't the last bid for the busy summer season though. That would mean no recalls till 2011.

So we have G. B. saying he sees no way around 25-40 recalls during the SIC seminar last week....and then this bid comes out.

You have to realize that Angle Lake usually keeps people like GB & TK in the dark. GB shouldn't be coming out and saying things like that. He's a good guy and a straight-shooter, but he should know better than to discuss recall numbers, etc.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see any recalls until Spring 2011. Granted BT is pushing for a 4% growth (whatever "growth" means any more) by the end of the year. But, would they really recall anyone in the Fall? Probably not.

GB did NOT say 25-40 last week. I've been to every one of the SIC seminars and although I've been bugging him for months for a number of recalls, and he hasnt' budged in keeping that info tight to the vest. He did indicate that recalls were inevitable, but NO NUMBERS were said.

let's hope for another bid coming out after this one closes for 25-40 recalls. Or how about 106....??

Do you really need another bid to recall? The way I read the contract, the only thing it says is that open positions will be filled in a specific order (Active, recall, new-hire). However I don't see where is says there has to be a bid to recall. All I see is a 21 day advance notice is required to recall.

Am I wrong?

QCappy !

What about this part;

J. Process of Recall

3999 2. Preference Bid:
A recalled pilot shall complete a system-wide preference bid
upon reporting for service. The pilot shall be placed either into service, if
qualified, or into training if not qualified for his position.

Does this mean a Bid with all pilots involved after or before coming back on the property???

I'm buying the first round of Midnight Sun Brew upon recall !

Does anyone else think it is funny that the company is advertising on here on APC and FI along with Airlines.net? I wonder how many revenue people they are attracting through those websites.

It's not that they specifically advertise on these places, but the advertisement will show up if you have either visited alaskaair.com or sometimes it's based on your IP location. We see the Alaska ad, others will see a different ad.
