Child directed traffic at JFK
|
Sure, maybe not the safest thing in the world... but it is pretty funny. Slap him on the wrist and be done with it.
|
We need emergency revocation of the controller's certificates! Screw due process, this is such a grave breach of flight discipline that only immediate revocation will make the flying public safe!!!
Bet you won't hear that coming from Babbit's mouth. |
Of course not because he is a government employee.
Its those pilots trying to mess with the free market that are the problem!! |
I've got to admit, my children have spoken on the radio, both in ATC facilities and in the plane.
But we can all think of some seemingly innocent "kid to work day" stuff that very quickly got out of control. The Russian A300 that killed everybody in the far east is probably the best example (kid lost control sitting in the left seat in cruise, with daddy right behind him). When Sully dropped his A320 in the Hudson, his actual May Day call was blocked by the controller transmitting. What if that had been a kid talking, and AWE1549 had a less satisfactory outcome? It was cute, though. Loved the "adios amigo". |

Whether he is a member of the union, or not, he will be represented as a bargaining unit member of NATCA, the controller's union. You'll see that a first offense can be charged with removal. http://nso.natca.org/NSO%20Docs/LR_D...20tblchart.pdf Table of Penalties 30. Misuse of Government time, property, personnel, information, funds or leased services (including, not limited to, computers and systems, fax, telephone, mail services, etc.). First Offense - Reprimand to removal 39. General gross misconduct; criminal, infamous, immoral, perverted or disgraceful conduct on or off the job. First Offense - 30-day suspension to removal |
I am sorry if you missed it, but the post was dripping with sarcasm.
|
Now that's funny :)
|
He did better than some controllers I have talked to in the past.
|
Easier to understand him than many of the controllers I speak to around the world.. and he probbaly had better training!
|
I'm in Boston on a layover. This was the #1 news story here last night. I wouldn't be surprised if this story gains legs like the Northwest incident.
|
Congress should now pass a law banning controllers from bringing children to the Tower... better yet, Congress should pass a law forbidding men and women with children to be controllers.
/sarcasm |

Yet another example of over-sensitive newsies making something out of nothing.
Poor judgement on the controller's part? Maybe Safety issue? Come on, nothing to see here. The real safety issue is all those unprofessional pilots "chatting" on the flight deck. We really should start monitoring the CVR tapes . . . . :D I remember going to the airport with my dad and getting to program the FMC and "helping" with the walkaround back when I was in high school. Good thing we didn't get caught  It's a shame because the kid probably had the time of his life, and may have one day grown up to be a controller. Now an innocent father/son day at work is going to blow up on their family like a big FOX News/Bureaucratic $hitstorm. Hopefully the dad just gets a week or two off, and is able to go back to work. I'm just a little sick of trivial occurrences making headlines because an airplane was involved. Fortunately, I won't be able to bring my kids to work (and get in trouble) because the TSA makes it such a pain in the ass getting them anywhere near an airplane to show them what their dad actually does for a living. |
Too bad that controller is always pleasant to work with when I'm at Kennedy, but he should know better though. Times are different now. Everyone is out to get everyone. Would love to have my family on my jumpseat, but oh well.
|
What a waste of news time. What happened? .....nothing.....
Bad idea? Well, I can't say because I wasn't there when it happened but who gives a flying ******* because nothing went wrong and I agree with LeineLodge, the kid had the time of his life and now his whole freaking family is going to be under government watch or some bull crap because he had a fun day with his dad. BTW, that was the best I've ever heard someone younger than 15 talk on the radio. I understood every word he said. I don't know, maybe I'm biased...... |
I'm embarrassed by our national news media. They are so quick to criticize and persecute. 40 years ago this would've been one of those "feel-good" stories on the 5pm news. Now its a lynch mob. HEY WORLD, CHILL OUT AND ENJOY LIFE A BIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
I am pretty sure DTW GC has a children working the radios. Not much of what they do makes sense.
|
Cue the douche Oberstar in 3...2...1
|
They won't take anyone off the streets whose older than 30, makes sense to get the younger generation prepped for controlling.
|
ATC... So easy, even a kid can do it. There go the salaries!!!!!
Just joking. I could NEVER handle the job, stress, workload that those guys handle. I wouldn't last a day. And for the record, the guys/gals at JFK are TOP NOTCH. |

Really??? Well, maybe. But so as to not throw too many rocks, but it is that whole airspace that is an abortion. For example: Why not allow the NAT bound aircraft that can takeoff on 31R do so, and instead of doing a 270 degree turn about the ARP, turn right climb to 5000 feet, accelerate to 320 and go buster for the entry point? Oh, it's because LGA rules the whole airspace, and we are holding to some antiquated speed limit that Europe got rid of years ago. As long as the NY airspace remains the way it is, these people might be what some perceive as good, but I think they can do better.

FIRE 'EM
300+ lives in NYC airspace is serious business. |

The name of this story should be "Child repeated after his father in JFK tower" Directed traffic? I think thats horribly misleading. I highly doubt that this kid was manning the scopes, punching the buttons on the console, and waving those little paper strips (if they still have them) around. The worst offense here is him keying the mic. All he did was repeat after his pops who no doubt was plugged in right next to him and was actually "directing traffic". Whats sad is he might lose his job because of the alarmist in this country. I would venture to say that at no point was safety compromised in this little adventure.

Wow
It's amazing that on "take your kid to work" day, a responsible adult took his responsible child to work! We are professionals here, right? And as professionals we make our own judgments as to how we are going to carry out our flights in a SAFE and profitable manner. And if we have a little fun in our day, good for you!
By listening to the tape, the child and father were BOTH mic'ed up and i'm pretty sure ole Pops knows how to pull the plug on his kid (or an intern) if things went south. I'm sorry to see that this man might lose his job because our lackluster regulatory agency doesn't trust his judgement. Bull$hit if you ask me. just my .02 |
Have you ever tried to talk to Piarco or Amazonia going to GEO, POS, or GRU? You have to turn up the radio loud just to understand them.
|
Definitely another example of the extreme wussification of this country. "We should sequester all the children at home, all the time, in front of the TV, don't ever expose them to anything!"
Heck, I remember getting into ATC towers and trans-Atlantic airliner cockpits when I was a kid, in the 80's and 90's! En-route! So Dad shows Son that he too, if he studies hard at school, can do cool things too, that a controller, a pilot, etc etc isn't some superhuman with extraterrestrial abilities. This reaction is like closing the beaches in the summer because ONE shark sometimes takes ONE person swimming in the sharks' house. Meanwhile, almost 40,000 people a year die in automobile accidents, in the US! |
My GOD our society needs to lighten up.............
|
FAA spokesman:
"The FAA is not amused" Which begs the question, When were grey suited 1960s styled bureaucrats at the FAA ever amused at anything? By the way, the folks at airlinenightmare.com asked me to thank all the pilots here for all your positive support and messages! |
good god! Here we go again, another slow news day?

Good grief what is this world coming to. Maybe it would have been better if mommy had taken little Johnny to see how porn movies are made. I don't feel safety was compromised at all since dad was right there and all he did was clear the jet for takeoff. I think the kid did a dam fine job. How would you like to be a passenger on this airline with a V1 cut into bad weather.

This kid did a darn good job.....how about getting him an invite to OKC for training when he's old enough.
|
Well, I'm feeling a little bit frisky today, so what the heck....I'll play Devil's Advocate.
Let's start with a little Quiz: You're flying along fat dumb and happy, and the Captain (or F/O as the case may be) turns to you and says "Hey, my kid is in back. He's going to go on the layover with me, do you mind if I bring him up on the jumpseat. I promise he won't touch any of the controls and besides, 20 or 30 years ago, we used to do this all the time" What do you say in response and why? |
