Sorry if this isn't the place for this question, but I will be on AA 110 to Rome Tuesday and have noticed the departure time for the flight has fluctuated wildy while a similar flight I was on to London last November, AA 86, always seems to leave on time.
If there are any American pilots reading this post, do you have any insights as to why this flight's departure time varies so often? Does it have something to do with flights headed to Rome, the ash cloud, or delays at ORD? I noticed the UAL and Alitalia flights leaving from ORD also have varying degrees of late departures.
Just asking because I'm headed for a cruise that leaves Wednesday from Rome's port about an hour away. Thanks in advance.

If you are looking stats recently, I can only imagine you would see some irregular departure times. Keep an eye on the ash cloud!
As to what another poster said, and I do not say this to be rude or funny. I would always leave an extra day for travel if I am meeting up to connect on a cruise, purchased or non-reving.
Safe Travels,

We've got travel insurance so missing the ship wouldn't be financially catastrophic. Normally, we go the day before, but not this time. I'm just curious if the delays are an ORD thing or something else. If anyone has an inkling about it, I appreciate it.
Truthfully, I'm not looking forward to a 9 hour red eye. I always feel like I've been hit by a truck.

The volcano in Iceland has been playing havoc with Eurocontrol and getting slot times, sometimes 2 hours after scheduled departure or being canceled outright. Depending on where the ash is, sometimes they've been down to only two NAT Tracks, and those go up as far as 66N, increasing flight time. I'm afraid it'll be like this all summer.
If traveling to Europe this summer, bring along a lot of patience, and give yourself plenty of wiggle-room on being someplace.

So far, AA 110 is 5 hours late for the 17th of May. I'm assuming the same 767-300 is not being used for each trip between ORD and FCO. Otherwise, the airline will never catch up. I just talking out loud here, but there must be something going on with this flight considering it's always late while the other European flights generally leave on time.
What's the rule for a delay like this for the flight crew? At some point, does another crew need to be called in for the flight and when does an airline just cancel the flight?
