A couple of points here. You can't normally be assigned to fly into your off days. That is way down the trip coverage ladder. You can put in a GS and volunteer. Regardless of if you volunteer you get paid for all flying on the off days above the reserve guarantee. If you still have on call days left that month you will get the days off paid back. If there is no place to put the days that month then they become payback days and can be used as you determine.
16. A reserve pilot who is eligible for an additional day(s)-off under Section 23 S. 11. - 14.
will:
a. take such day(s)-off in the current or a future bid period, by mutual agreement with
Crew Scheduling, or
b. have such day(s) added to a current year vacation period(s), by mutual agreement
with Vacation Planning, or
c. have such day(s) added to his earned vacation for the next vacation year, if not used
in the current vacation year.

In the last case you mentioned I don't believe they were flown into off days. The trip originated outside their shortcall window but they were still on long call. Normally that would not happen since trip coverage is based on your status at time of trip report. If they had another pilot on short call over the time of report he would get the trip first.

When will Delta be calling for interviews again?

I heard no more hiring until late next summer so if that is the case then the interviews will start up late spring time.

I'm curious as well. Any word?

You misunderstood what they were saying - they weren't being used into a day off, they were being called at the last minutes of short-call, when the next day was a regular, long-call reserve day.

I've been at Delta almost three years, on reserve about half of it, and never been forced to fly on a day off. I don't know anyone else who has either. I guess it could happen, but as Sailingfun said, it's so far down the list of who gets called, it's very unlikely. Basically, there has to be almost no one else on your airplane, anywhere in the company who doesn't want to get paid double-pay to fly your trip.

There are times where a mechanical or other event (think Iceland volcano) forced people into their days off, but that's when there is no other way to get home.

Say there is a 5 day trip that they can't cover - scheduling would break it up into a series of smaller trips in order to cover it, rather than reroute someone into their days off, or force someone to fly on their days off, in order to cover the whole 5 day trip.

Excellent job of covering this! I've been on reserve for a little over 3 1/2 years. The only time I've ever flown into an X day is when I've had some kind of mechanical or event where we couldn't get back as scheduled. And that's only happened maybe a couple of times that I can remember.
