As a 20 year Delta guy I'm not optimistic about "holding the line on scope". I say this because of the history of DALPA and the Delta pilots voting record on this issue.

Guys talk tough in the cockpit, they talk tough in the pilot lounges, and in the Internet age, they talk tough here too. But the reality is they vote in the privacy of their own homes looking at their wives, their children, mortgage payments, car payments etc. and that's when they knuckle under.

IMHO DALPA has an abyssmal record on scope negotiations which has been ratified by the pilot group literally every time. Why will it be different "this time"?

I certainly don't see a shift in the position of ALPA national, and none of the contenders for ALPA president has indicated (to the best of my knowledge) a hard line position for the majors to recapture their flying.

I sincerely hope I'm proven wrong...

 

Why should anyone care if recapturing scope causes regional pilots to be furloughed? Regional pilots only have jobs because those jobs were outsourced from the MAINLINE pilots that they rightfully belong to.

 

If I were a regional guy in this situation, I would be happy to be furloughed... no, make that, I would honestly and genuinely beg to be furloughed... if that meant jobs were being created at mainline.

Many regional pilots would rather be #1 at the bottom of a mainline list than #1 at the top of a regional list.... they'd be nothing short of completely thrilled to see all scope brought back and their employer put out of business. It'd be a rough time short term but it'd be better for most everyone's careers.... mainline and regional pilot alike.

Question, RJ guys, tell us about the lifers? What % of them reside on the seniority lists?

Someone said it and I have to believe it, there are a lot more than there ever used to be as jobs have dried up and you settle in and start to worry about providing for your family.

Not that RJ pilots determine scope, it'd just be interesting to know.

At Comair, I would say the top 200-250ish (this is 20-19 years) for sure, and then maybe 10% of the rest of the CA's I fly with say they don't have an interest in going anywhere else.

Mind you that was mostly before our recent announcement of parking half the fleet. After that the most junior CA will be about seniority number 250 (20 years)...and the most junior FO will have been here 11 years. So I am betting a lot of peoples plans have shifted. Well except some of the top 300 are saying we need to take pay cuts (fo pay cuts specifically by an individual running for ca rep), to make the company competitive. I say no thanks.

My stats (to put my view in perspective), age 28, 5.5 years longevity, FO the whole time. Would much rather be on the bottom of a mainline list than anywhere on a regional list.

 

Alpa cares...furloughed regional pilots don't pay dues. PO-ed regional pilot groups tend to defect to IBT. Also alpa probably has a legal duty to NOT mount a deliberate campaign to destroy the jobs of regional pilots they represent.

And no, they are not looking at the long term where a furloughed regional pilot might wind up with a higher paying mainline job someday. A bird in the hand...

Me personally, I would prefer to be at mainline.

 

You have got to be kidding me. Pay cuts to be competitive, they really think that's gonna help??? The writing has been chiseled on the wall.
