I am very happy that FEDEX and other freight carriers have been able to maintain decent pay scales. If it hadn't been for them, .
A320 makes a very valid point. It wasn't too long ago that we FedEx was at the bottom (pay and benefit wise) of the Big Legacies. We are now at or near the top........not because we negotiated anything, but because of the Bankruptcy courts allowing the shredding of USair, UAL, DL, NWA contracts and those folks came down to or below us.

Today is a mere Snapshot of how things look.

If FedEx or UPS loses a jet in a similar 9/11 type incident.........we could be brought to our knees in a NANO second. Don't think that $100 barrel oil won't affect us either, it will.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good place to work (sans nightflying) and if you get a class date here good on you. But don't think for a minute that being a FedEx Pilot is a guarantee to a happy 30 year flying career. You might get lucky but don't count on it.

Like a previous poster said.................it is all a moot point unless you have 2 offers from CAL and FedEx. Each of us has specific needs and only you can decide which company best provides those needs. As a pilot either place is a good job............for the near future.

No perfect world? Really? Thanks for pointing it out to me that there is no such thing. I actually thought we were living in a perfect world right now.

Son, my point was that after seeing what happened with the pax carriers after 9/11, I am paranoid (meaning concerned more than anything....I guess I was being dramatic) of getting furloughed. If you are not....good for you. I guess I should be in la la land instead of alert and realistic.

.

Then why try to set-up a "what-if" scenario? You know the sayings....."if pigs had wings"...yada...yada..yada.

Furloughs have been caused by a number of things. Bad economy, Bad management, terrorist attacks, world wars. The threat of furlough has been a part of aviation for a long...long..time. I don't know if it will ever not be a threat to a career. So to be paraniod over it, what good does it do? If it happens at your carrier......it happens.....whether you were paraniod over it or not. Why worry? You knew this when you got into aviation....right?

If you are not....good for you.
No...I'm not..thank you.

I am very alert...just not paraniod. Am I realistic...you bet! You won't find me posting any "what ifs...or in a perfect world" scenarios.

Oh, and your refer to "Son". If that's your way of making yourself gain respect, perhaps raising yourself to an "above" others status then so be it.
Some pilots just have to wear BIG wrist watches.......LOL

Does anyone know how long it takes to upgrade to captain at FedEx and Continental? Also, can someone tell me what planes Continental operates out of CLE?

Joseph-- As of right now at Cal, I think guys who have been there 6 months would hold Newark 737 Captain in 18 months.... FedEx, don't quote me but I am guessing 5 year upgrade on 727 in Memphis... As far as what Cal flies in Cleveland, right now and probably for the foreseeable future just the 737.... Hope this helps....

An 18-24 month upgrade from DOH to 73 CA? If that were true there is no way in HELL they would be hiring pilots with no PIC.

It's closer to three years. I've been there 1 years, 4 months and I'm 200 numbers from holding CA. There are a lot of retirements at CAL.

Chief...it's my way of being sarcastic.

I don't worry about gaining respect especially from someone on an internet message board.
