Pardon my lack of heavy experience, but would a bird like the 77L have a weight restriction that could be so exact that it has to leave with two open seats like in this situation mentioned above?

Depends on the amount of cargo they want to put on it, the temp in Dubai (it's cold this time of year, so not usually a problem) and winds for the ride home.

BUT...sometimes this time of year, there is nasty weather in the ATL area, so it will require additional alternate fuel.

Every aircraft (theoretically) has its weight and balance that exact. However, there is often a tolerance (of allowable slop) on the AWABS (weight and balance) allowing the pilots to add more performance, people or cargo.

The people are either summer or winter weight (slop), cargo is exact weight and station, fuel is exact density within guage error, etc.

So yes and no. It is however all done within specified guidlines.

We needed at least a 6 knt headwind to get out of Joburg the other night...then they switched runways so we had a tailwind, couldn't go, then it started raining, had to wait it out, ...then they switched runways back again...finally, 40 minutes later, we were 'leagal' to go, by 1k. We did fill up the airplane however, and I think there were about 23 non-revs. that got on.

I don't know the guy, but it sounds like the company he works for (Kalitta Air) bought him a coach ticket (they don't get business class for any deadheading). Then after push, there was an empty BE seat, and the deadheading Captain must of mentioned to the one of the working Captains and they moved him up.

Ahh...ok, that makes sense.

I have had some A lines tell me, "We don't have enought first class meals..." when I've done it. I just tell them, "Give him mine." You should see the look on their faces! Somehow, they always seem to have enough for both of us.

That's because "Mr Kippers, Fluffy," and company usually get any extra meals when mama gets home.....

Except of course that the max certificated weight is dependent on how much you pay Boeing.
