And that is really the most important part. It's a pilot shortage because no one wants to/can become a pilot. They can't because the cost to benefit is way out of control. If it was a true shortage, the flight schools would be jammed pack, buying new airplanes, paying instructors huge bonuses, etc. Since this is not the case, it's not really the kind of shortage that one thinks of. It's the "oh wow, they rant out of $200 40" LCD TVs at best buy for black friday"-shortage. Well no kidding, that wasn't a sustainable promotion and not viable to make money...

Depends, if there are finite resources, you can't really get anything more. If you fire a bunch of pilots/let airlines go out of business and then charge more for tickets, well yeah, but that's probably not going to happen by choice.

He probably telecommutes and does not even have to "Drive to work."
Does sound nice after fighting the traffic and pax to get to a job hundreds of miles from ones home.

When the industry says shortage here is what they mean: We want the flexibility to furlough at will, shift flying around to more Jr less expensive regionals. When those getting laid off leave the industry all together, we need new blood to come and take year one pay at gojet etc. So in that sense, yes there will be a shortage of pilots taking jobs at 20k/yr just to find themselves never upgrading and stuck in the right seat of an rj for the foreseeable future. Until the flying shifts again and they can either choose to go elsewhere at year one, or use their degrees to make a living. On and on and on. Oh and the retirements at the majors are going to be used to rightsize themselves while overlap in routes are eliminated after mergers.

When my dad says to me "but there is a pilot shortage" this is my response.
Say we are going to start a hospital and specialize in neurosurgery. We post job openings for surgeons, require 10 years of experience and offer 50k for the position. When nobody applies we go on tv and newspapers and claim there is a shortage of surgeons.
That is your pilot shortage.
