Best one-liner of the thread!

Sure, you would.

I'd rather be at Delta than SW, but I would (reluctantly) accept the top spot at SW. No doubt a crushing blow to Delta, but it would do so much for SWA.

Second, it would add complexity to SWA's operations that they clearly do not want. IOW.. they pay $2.1 billion for a bunch of airplanes and pilots that they would turn around and get rid of... in that case, $2.1 billion is a lot of money for JFK access. And SWA is still trying to digest a merger that is taking a lot of bicarbonate of soda. They are hardly in the position to go out and try it again. No.. a JB/VX merger makes far more sense to me... west coast, east coast carriers with little overlap. JMHO...

I see it a bit differently. 2 bil is nothing to go from an almost meaningless presence to a solid contender overnight in the world's biggest and by far most important domestic market (let alone international connectivity down the road). Especially when there is no other way for them to get in to that extent.

The AT merger is roughly 2 years away from being completed and back to single fleet type. It would take a year just to start the process of anything fleet related anyway so there's really only a year's window.

It's been hours, and no one from SWA called to give me the top spot.

How peculiar.

I took the first offer, Southern Airways. My first choices would have been National, Eastern, and Braniff. We know how that would have worked out. Canceled an interview with United, avoiding a long furlough. I retired from Northwest but my retirement check says Delta. I would give you my crystal ball, but I think I broke it.

Industry consolidation has made the choice easier, but it is still a crap shoot. A guy in my reserve unit bought a Lear type and went to work for some little outfit we never heard of, Fed EX. Who new?
