Default O'Hare operations Dec. 1

Watching the news out here on the west coast, it looks like O'Hare is a mess today. FedEx got stuck in the mud, American canceled many flights, United canceled over 350 flights.

Anyone want to share experiences from the O'Hare operation today?

It sucked, and I shouldn't even have been there in the first place!

FEDEX looked like it went off the end, lots of equipment at the scene (14R maybe?).

My friend (AA MD80 FO) said he got about a foot of snow at his condo in Schaumburg (about 20 minutes from ORD). He wasn't working but heard that ORD was shut down all night and that FedEx overran.

STL was a mess this week too. Biggest problem they had wasn't the snow, it was the ice. We had about two inches of sleet and freezing rain. When they finally got the runways and aircraft cleaned they couldn't use the jetways because they were frozen too.

I was talking with Cleveland and Chicago centers in the middle of the day during the bad weather and it was sssooooo quiet. Normally you have to compete to get a call acknowledged, and several times I thought I had missed a freq change. When I asked center why it was so quiet, he said ORD and many other airports were closed. I was glad I was simply passing through and not landing.
