I will definetly use the phrase OMC in that case. Just curious... What's it stand for?

UNITED
CASS

United Airlines offers Observer Member of the Crew (OMC) jumpseating to eligible pilots and dispatchers of carriers that maintain reciprocal jumpseat agreements with United Airlines. Pilots and dispatchers contracted to operate within the United Express route system are granted a ‘K’ boarding priority while OAL/offline pilots are granted an ‘L’ boarding priority. Boarding will be first come first serve within the respective boarding category. UA now permits unlimited jumpseating on all domestic and international flights.

DOMESTIC: Pre-listing for OMC through UA’s reservation system is not required. OMC requests are processed by the agent at the departing gate (Domestic includes AK, HI and all U.S. Territories.) Per TSA and FAA requirements, offline pilots will initially be processed for a cabin seat. If the cabin seating is filled, the pilot will be processed for the flight deck jumpseat. Passports are no longer required for CASS verification.

INTERNATIONAL: Pre-listing for OMC through UA’s reservation system is not required. For US outbound flights, the check in process is conducted at the departure gate. For international inbound flights to the US, check in must be completed at the international station ticket counter. The pilot must pay all applicable departure fees and taxes for the specific flight. All offline international jumpseat travel is restricted to Cabin Seating only. In the event that UA imposes temporary international NRSA travel embargos, cabin seat jumpseats are not bound by these restrictions.

Jumpseaters seated in the cabin are not permitted to consume alcohol. Uniform or business casual attire is required. When boarding begins, please proceed to the cockpit and introduce yourself to the Captain, regardless of seat assignment. Pilots will be required to present a valid company ID, airmen and current medical certificates. The jumpseat access is the sole discretion of the Captain. Website: United Airlines ? Also, can someone enlighten me as to why cockpit jump-seating is acceptable on airlines like Atlas, Kalitta, and many other ACMIs, but absolutely unacceptable on FedEx, UPS, United, Delta, etc.?
We in the U.S. are very weird about the jumpseat. In Europe most carriers will put any non-rev in the flight deck. I have been offered the flight deck a few times in Europe while non-revving. I was told once I may have to do it flying back to the states on a European carrier. I did see an adult child of an employee get the flight deck jumpseat on a U.S. bound flight.

So if you are riding on a European carrier you can ride in the flight deck internationally even if you are not employed by the airline. On Atlas, Kalitta, etc you can ride in the flight deck internationally even if you are just a courier. But as a known flight deck crew member, who has passed an FBI background check and who is in CASS, you cannot occupy the flight deck on any U.S. passenger airline other than your own. Makes no sense.

NEPilot, I assumed as much for many years, until I learned that FX and UPS don't allow it either, which is the part I'm confused by as many other carriers do allow it.

I've heard the reinforced door argument as well, but Kalitta only has curtains or a hatch on most of their 747s

Atlas only has a curtain as well, and they allow couriers to ride. About three years ago TSA announced it was their intention to do away with the international flight deck access restriction, but thus far there has been no progress on it.

Bringing this thread back. I've just listed on UA for an international jumpseat for the first time from the US. It looks like there may be some business class seats open. I know that United will upgrade jumpseaters, but what is the protocol? My standby printout just lists me for Y (coach) and according to the UA app, I'm not on the upgrade list. Will the gate see that I'm an OMC and upgrade me or is it a matter of asking the captain. I listed at a service center, and said I just wanted to jumpseat. Of course I'll sit in coach if that's all thats available, but just curious. (I do know that bringing chocolates, and being super nice to the purser helps)

Thanks

Sorry, I don't remember EXACTLY.

But under the old apollo/"OMC" system, when the seats were cleared it would kick you up as far as a business class seat for seat issuing purposes as long as one was vacant on an int'l leg.

Under the new share/sonic/webjump (or whatever), it DOESN'T do that.

It's up to you to socially engineer it. Again, IIRC.

UA used to list OMCs in international business. Since the switch to CO's reservation system, it has been my experience that now they automatically list you for Y.
