I’m going out an a limb here, but I’m thinking the new company would be called “Delta Airlines.” There’s no way the double breasted Delta professionals would have it any other way.

The "double breasted Delta professionals" won't have much of a say in what happens here, much less what the combined carrier would be called.

While I'd still have us go it alone, at least a Northwst combination would address the weaknesses in our respective route structures. CVG would go away in favor of DTW and/or MSP, and MEM would go away due to ATL. but other than that, the domestic structure is largely complementary. Our strength in Europe and South America complements their Asian routes. The fleet disparities would be a challenge, but that could be fixed, with the help of our biggest unsecured creditor (Boeing).

With the USAirways deal, I just don't see what "synergies" they'd be bringing to the table.

I've heard this before, and in all forms the Delta name remains even though NWA is the buyer so to speak.

I don't think that MEM would go away in a merger with Delta.

ATL is already overloaded now and there are a ton of flights out of MEM for NW.

I don't think you could just move the entire MEM hub on top of the mess that is ATL.

Granted, ATL is at or near capacity now. What I think would happen is that dehubbing MEM would allow for larger aircraft to serve those same city pairs. The same thing with dehubbing CVG. Larger aircraft = lower CASM.

My guess is that a US Air Delta merger puts about 1,000 pilots on the street and the NW, DAL deal would be far less perhaps in the area of 300 to 500. Either way DAL pilots will be the losers.
