The retirement rate at "New American" between '15 and '18 is just unreal. (All this attrition is a double edged sword if the airlines go to the senate and congress to open the floodgates to cabotage, but that's another story…)
It's great to see pilots having options.
Sounds like pilot like NoDeskJob can have their pick, and that is great. When I started hiring was so slim and competition so fierce pilots were paying for training. Lets hope those days are over.
The Big Three have consolidated not only the US airline industry, but also airline LABOR. All of a sudden labor has a lot of clout now.
The regionals have finally had enough, and are demanding better too. All good things.
Best of luck to all, and I am not jealous that I had to struggle so hard and the industry is up-swinging. What's good for new hires is good for us all.
NDJ,
I will say, I went to the 757 to fly it thinking I may not have a chance to later, even though I dreaded the HI red eyes (PHX based west pilot). It turns out, the red eyes are manageable….and this is about some of the longest unaugmented flying that can be done routinely going 7+ and over 8 during winter months.
It has been some of the best flying I've ever done, and I would never go back to domestic medium/short unless forced to. The thing with transcons also is that on a four day trip, there can be two flip/flops. Yikes. I've seen what the Airbus is doing, and it looks like it hurts! I do one leg out, 30hrs, one leg back.
The augmented stuff from what I've heard is pretty good.
I suppose what I'm saying is never say never; until you get into the seat it's hard to gauge what you will actually like. If you go for a legacy with long-haul you can always try it and go back to domestic. If you go with smaller LCC or SW, then you have already made the domestic choice for your career.
Overseas at a legacy is nothing like MIL.
YMMV, best of luck.
