Default Do I need IFR Currency/4500+ TT; Competitive?

I am wondering if I need to have recent instrument and night time to be considered for DAL specifically, and all the majors in general. I flew plenty of instruments in my last military flying job, and a little in a 172 just before I retired, but none in the last 2 years. Other times:
4500+ TT (mostly fighter and T-38 time)
3000+ Turbine
2300+ PIC
1800+ IP
500+ in last year, 1100+ in last 24 months
ATP, B737TR, CFI, CFII, MEI, AGI, A&P
Oh, and I'm also working on a PhD as far as education goes.
But no IFR time in 24 months. And no internal recommendations.

Should I get IFR recurrent in order to be considered competitive? How long might I have to wait for an interview? Am I even in the running?

Maybe no specific requirement for some airlines but I would say yes absolutely. You have 500 hours in the last year which is excellent, but the clock is ticking on those 500 hours so don't screw up what you have. You can get instrument and night current in a small twin with about 3-5 hours of flying, I'm not up on the regs but maybe even some of that in a ground trainer.

DAL has a 100hr in 12 months requirement. I had a similar background to you with a 2yr non flying job and kept current flying 172s and 182s. CAP is a great way to do tha and has RedBird sims that are loggable for IFR currencies. As a bonus, you get to work with great kids and do real missions from time-to-time.

And with 4500 hrs fighter/trainer time, I'm thinking you should be able to get an internal rec. Sign up for LinkedIn and start building old contacts again.

I retired 2 years ago. I now fly nearly every day. That 500+ a year is in my current civilian gig. I know I'm getting enough total and PIC time, I'm mainly looking for detail on how much current instrument time is Required.
Thanks for the input on CAP. Great organization. Been involved (off and on…currently off) since I was a kid.

They don't care about "instrument currency". Just meet the currency requirement (ie 100 hours in 12 months) and you'll be good. With your experience, they know you can hold and fly an ILS.
