The good part about Alaska:
1st) Its super laid back. No stress job.
2nd) Most pilots are local so they try to build the flying to accommodate this majority.
3rd) The people you work with, Pilots, FAs, Gate agents are mostly happy with their jobs, so they are nice to work with.
The bad parts about Alaska:
1st) The Pay; Our first 5 years of FO pay is well below all the Legacys (between 20,000-30,000 per year). Also our retirement is less at 13.5% compared to 15-16%.
2nd) Lack of international travel benefits. I used to have Delta benifits before this job and I traveled all over the world, often in business class. Zed fares don't really work, especially if your trying to get your family anywhere. You can't check exact flight loads or where you would stand on the standby list. I have only used them as a back up option.
3rd) Alaska is small and I feel the chances of them one day merging are rather high, so your kind of playing roulette with your seniority.

Just as an aside, the PDX-SEA commute is one of the toughest around. Lots of competition, expecially with QX guys who have jumpseat priority.
The AS PDX base is currently the fastest growing, so that may sway your decision to AS.
Either way you won't lose. What a great dilemma to face!

I think either one would be great. What an awesome choice to have at 37! Everyone I know at Delta is happy. On the other hand Alaska is one of my favorite airlines. I know there is a lot of concern over Delta's Seattle expansion. Even if down the road Alaska started to show stress from Delta's pressure, it would probably lead to an American merger, which I don't think would be a bad thing for Alaska pilots anyways.
