Southwest Airlines flight attendants overwhelming reject proposed contract
By a 9,916-to-1,446 vote, flight attendants Friday rejected a tentative agreement with Southwest Airlines.
The rejection will send the Transport Workers Union and Southwest management back to the negotiating table, more than two years after talks first began.
The proposed deal received opposition as much for changes in work rules, duty times and other language as for the pay proposal– three annual raises of 3 percent each and two annual bonuses over the next five years.
The preliminary results means that seven of every eight flight attendants who voted were against the deal.
The Transport Workers Union Local 556 and the airline had been negotiating a new deal for two years. They announced the tentative agreement in early July.
Developing.
Votes Percentage
Yes 1,446 12.7%
No 9,916 87.3%
Total 11,362 100.0%
The rejection will send the union and Southwest back to the negotiating table. Southwest is also in negotiations with TWU for its ramp workers, the Southwest Airlines Pilots’ Association for its pilots and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association for its aircraft maintenance technicians, and as well several other smaller groups.

Hopefully this sends a message to SWA management that the front line employees will not accept concessions during a time of record breaking profits, oil at historically low prices and off the chart load factors.
Expecting to see a pilot TA to vote on this fall -- hopefully it's not full of concessions and givebacks.

SWA is now going to have to cancel their order of the newer/smaller/lighter carts they had planned to buy for the FAs. Due to their smaller size they would have been able to add more carts to each jet, thus requiring more FAs (to include more higher paying A line jobs) to push the extra carts up the aisle. This would have allowed more junior FAs to bid the higher paying positions...well you can say goodbye to those extra higher paying jobs! Thanks a lot No voters!
