VISA requirement for France
#1
If your not a regular lurker on the Cargo thread, there is a discussion on the recent requirement for (cargo, FedEx??) pilots to have a crew member visa to enter France. Its creating a major issue with FedEx intl pilots/operations. My question is, is anyone else (pax carriers) aware and if so how is your employer dealing with this "new" requirement??
Would like to hear from someone other than FedEx pilots as to what they know (or don't) regarding this issue.

Not a new requirement. When I checked out on the 767 back in 99 I wa told to go get it. The VISA lasts for 5 years. You can get it any French consulate here in the states. My understanding was it was still required way before 99.
Not sure why they had not requested cargo guys to get it earlier.

To add on, my buddy at CAL at the same time in 99 had to get his French Visa as well when he was a DC-10 FE.

I've been flying to France both passengers and freight since 1969 and never had a visa.

I don't know what to say, they required our FAs to get it, and our pilots. When I requaled back on the 767 after a 2 year stint on the 737, one of the first things they asked was "do you have your French Visa?" Like I mentioned my buddy at CAl, and all his co-workers were required to get one.
On another MB, a few menioned they were required to do this in the early 90s. I thouhgt it was odd when I saw this post that you all didn't carry one now.I have run into some FEDEX crews in CDG in the past, and had a few, however we never brought up this subject.
Check with the other PAX guys and gals, but this not new to me or many others.
Good Luck, it is really more of a pain in the A$$ than anything else.

New one on me... been operating in and out of France for many years without a visa requirement. Are you sure its not Master Card or AMEX?

I had to get a french visa when I checked out on the 777. They probably don't care about the cargo ramp, just the people haulers.
Seriously, the visa is not required for business or pleasure travel. They are required for flight crewmembers.

I had to get one when I went from the 737 to 757/767. It's a pain and waste of money, unless you enjoy standing in lines. I've heard stories of pilots who went to Paris without a visa. They will not let them leave. The pilot had to take a train to London and get on a flight there. From what I hear, 99.9% of the time the French don't even check for a visa. If they check you, you had better have it. Why do they require it? The rumor is the US arrested some French pilots for smuggling drugs on a flight, so the French got ****ed and now require US pilots to get a "schengen" visa. I avoid France, but I do have the visa. It's good for 5 years. Not only does no one check my visa, but most countries don't even look at my passport. Only the US and Germany look at it.
