They would almost certainly survive anyway if descent initiated at any reasonable time. I've often wondered why the airlines even bother with the passenger oxygen masks, but there are enough decompressions I suppose it is good to include. Also, you'd want it if descent to breathable air was delayed (e.g. flying over the Himalayas). In continental USA, could get down to 15,000 feet pretty quickly anywhere and that would be sufficient to keep people alive. Could have bottled oxygen until landing for those with lung disease.

Otherwise nothing I saw above was really incorrect...

I believe all O2 generators/masks have been removed from the lavs, I think per TSA orders, or am I wrong? Sam

Gotta pull on the pin to light off the chlorate candle. If you don't, the candle doesn't burn. No burning candle, no oxygen.

It is TSA and airline policy not to discuss the presence or non-presence of special weapons in aircraft lavatories.

Oops... wrong public affairs guidance material.

Even though the flight attendants always say this, I did not understand the importance of this maneuver until I looked at the system. I think that most passengers would assume that the oxygen is from a tank where this action would be unimportant. A recent NPR quiz show asked panelists about the common things done on a commercial airplane, and when asked about oxygen masks, the "Pull on the tubing to initiate the flow of oxygen" was not mentioned. I would think that the flight attendants should be instructed to say that "Oxygen will not begin to flow until you pull firmly on the tubing" rather than using their current script.
The scripting usually is "pull the mask towards you to start the flow of oxygen". It doesn't matter though as people ignore what they here, too busy on their cell phones etc.. Bottom line is some people are going to die in a worst case scenario for a variety of reasons.

I'm not 100% positive but some (all?) airplanes only one person has to pull a mask for all the masks connected to the canister to start receiving O2.
