I have historically attempted to let my cartoons stand on their own and leave it up to the viewer to interpret it however they want. If it's read a different way than intended, that's OK, I can't control that. But this weeks cartoon was one I created a couple years ago and sat on. It was a tough one for me to do.

What spurred this post, was my last one where I say I like to make people smile, and I do, but every so often I will do one where it's more of an editorial on something, and Yesterdays fits that category. The Transair flight 810 was the one that triggered it. Thankfully the pilots survived, but it became clear, pretty quickly, that nobody outside of our tribe knew about it. It is what it is, and I get human nature, but I feel pulling the curtain back a little can be illuminating.

The excellent on-the-job safety that we enjoy as 121 pax pilots is a direct and unintended consequence of the government's vested interest in public safety and confidence.

Not because anybody thinks that we should have a particularly safe work environment

If they could figure out a way to improve pax safety by using the cockpit as a crumple zone, they would.

The reason your water heater at home does not blow up and kill you if it malfunctions is because it has a relief valve. The reason relief valves were developed was because railroad locomotives had their boilers over heat and exceed their pressure. They blew up and killed locomotive engineers and firemen. Standards and codes, unfortunately, have been developed from deaths.

I think art such as yours, should be left to the viewer to interpret and I appreciate that you let it happen. However, I also enjoy being let in on the creative process and back story as to why the piece was made. For that, I really enjoy your throwbacks where you ad the commentary. I feel like I get the best of both by following your Monday and Thursday posts.

Have you archived your Throwback Thursday commentaries or are they one-and-done?

Blue Dude,
I'm consolidating them into a book that I plan on publishing, (jeez that sounds pretentious). I didn't have any plans or end game when I started putting out a cartoon in April of 2016. I just wanted to lighten the mood and skewer all the buffoons in our world and our own hypocrisies. Time went on and they began to collect. As that happened it seemed the best way to respect the work I've put into them is to put them into a book. So to answer your question, my book is essentially a collection of the Throwbacks.

And folks, thanks for going easy on me regarding my explanation of SCOPE, as it can trigger many people in many different ways. I just imagined pilots gritting their teeth to weigh in on the topic.

With that all said, it's Monday!
