Well, not a Mesa pilot but a K4 and former ASA.
K4 new hires generally fall into two groups. Those who for one reason or another view it as their final stop; and those who want to move on. The latter group, as a whole, lacks the "desperation" to move on that you find at a regional and normally hold out for either a legacy, SWA, Brown or Purple. K4 is generally viewed by this group as a place to get the experience that can help in a move to something "better", but an airline where you can finish a career if things don't pan out. In my short time here I have seen quite a number of this group move on, even some with "skeletons", so getting the wide-body and international experience at K4 while making good money definitely seems to help. But by the time one makes captain the pay is quite good and very few captains leave. Probably the only thing lacking at K4 is the retirement, and that may well change with the next contract. |

Nice try NoLand3....we know it’s you. No way we have another K4 warrior out there, especially one who didn’t work for Mesa chiming in here.
A pretty happy pilot group at K4. |

Well, not to change the subject, but you don't see many K4 pilots leaving for the majors simply because they don't want to. Can't speak for the others, but heard Omni has very similar feelings about it. What we do is vastly different from what the majors do, to the point that going back to a similar lifestyle that many had at a regional isn't even up for consideration.
First year is $117/hr and top step 767 CA is $297/hr (highest first year pay in all of 121 currently) and you’re right again about the lifestyle, if a single longer trip and two weeks off all at once each month works for you, you can’t beat an ACMI. It a vacation every month. Bid right and you get 4 weeks off without using a single vacation day. Real tickets to/from work on day one, not going in the day before or staying a day after. Keeping all air miles and most hotel points adds up very fast. I do 1 leg, then have 2-3 nights off RON, then repeat. 8 legs a month is my schedule. The average guy flys 25-48 hours a month. Guarantee is 64 or if you bid into special programs it’s 80. It really has become an acceptable destination job in its own right. |

Very true. Omni has very little attrition to the majors now. The junior under 40 go off to the legacies still and to purple and brown. Guys over 40 with any seniority aren’t leaving.

Yup. I'm at K4 and have a CJO with a legacy. It isn't an easy decision. Do I take the slightly higher pay and the retirement contribution (which may come soon to K4 anyway), or door #2, not ever having to worry about a commute again?

Flying a 737 at a regional carrier will NOT separate your resume in a positive way from all the other regional pilots. If that were the case you would see all the guys at Atlas, Southern, K4, etc. flocking towards the majors quickly and that ain’t happening. What will happen is your peers will be judging you in an even more negative light given the fact you’d be choosing to fly a 737 at b-scale pay.
Was having a group discussion this morning with fellow K4 pilots, all were regional guys with ASA, Mesa, and Sky West being represented. We were all laughing about that bullcrap, no one cares! |
