Hello all. Just wanted to throw a scenario at you guys and see what you think. I have made my decision already so not looking for any advice just wanted to see what other peoples views on the subject are. I was all set to get out after 11 years in the AF. Had a blast but the deployments took a lot out of me. I was just waiting for my typical orders to the schoolhouse in LR so I could 7 day opt and get out. Well in typical AF fashion they threw me a curve ball and offered me 737BBJ to Ramstein in GE. Now I am faced with this dilemma. Stay in for my dream job in the AF or take a shot at the airlines. I have 2,500 PIC, buds in SW, UPS, FEDEX, CAL, and American. Now with the information provided would you have gone to Ramstein, or taken a shot at the airlines. I'll let you guys know what I did later.

I was a herk driver too and that is a tough call. Since we are doing more with less everyone is deploying. I am rolling the dice in AETC! Now is a good time to punch to get that senority at a major but a BBJ sounds nice. Personally, I would have " taken a shot".

I'm a very happy UPS FO who left AD a fw years ago, but I'd have to say that making O-4 pay in Ramstein would have been tough to pass up. That would be a great experience for the family and I don't think the ops tempo is too bad there is it?
I'd choose UPS/FDX/SWA over that assignment if it was a sure thing though. Being a DC-8 FE at UPS is a far better deal than being an AC of anything in the AD USAF IMHO.

T-1 where did you do your herk time at? I was at the 36th from 98-01, and then the 40th from 01-05. Currently teaching Spaniards how to land the herk

I would take Ramstein. The airlines should be hiring more when the tour is up. Plus you have a type in the 73 and 3-4 years in the fatherland. I flew OSA as well, and partly because our unit was so small, I think it was my best job in the Air Force.

I took the shot. Turned down Hickam assignment. I knew the AF wasn't going to be career, so I figured I'd get out while the getting is good. Plus they gave me the VSP.
Flying a BBJ at ETAR would be great, it's just the other BS I'm tired of. Instead I'll be flying a 737 for a company that's alot better run.

I also would have taken the leap...but that is easy to say because that is what I am doing. I don't have the same amount of hours as you but do have some good experience having flown the Lear and the C-5. I am taking the VSP and so far have 5 interviews lined up. None with are with my number one choice but hopefully that will come in due time.
Nevertheless, Ramstein is a great assignment and I personally wouldn't mind having that BBJ experience. By the time that ends you will be getting awfully close to retirement. There is nothing wrong with getting a guaranteed paycheck for the rest of your life either...
Screw it...just get out...

I am a year out from retirement...so tough for me to say but I believe I would have taken Ramstein with the type and more international time. Sounds like the perfect job to me.
BTW I was a herk dude too..Dyess 93-97.

Herkdrv,
Very tough choice for 11 year point. I flew w/the 76th (GIII and GIVSP) back before the Guppy came. Great location; great mission; lots of flying--half stateside, and half to everywhere else including Africa. That said, you do fly only 1 or 2 primary customers (4-stars), and have to deal with the tug-o-war with who rates the big jet. SACEUR usually wins that one, though.
Only down side I found was the politics--usually caused by senior leadership not familiar w/DV airlift. Trying to do things w/the jet they shouldn't be doing. That comes w/the territory.
That said, I loved my time @ ETAR, and only left, because I had to.
