New GI Bill

The way i understand it... you don't get housing/BAH, books, etc. if you "transfer" to your spouse/kids... only the Military member is able to get that benefit if they are 75% of a full time student or more.

Don't know, might be a little cheaper next year, but I'll wager that the price of that Type check/ATP will be somewhere pretty close to $2000. It will be worth every penny.
Overall, looks like good news, even for us old retired farts

So in 2004 I paid $1,200 to the Air Force to qualify for my Montgomery GI bill. Now that I qualify for the Webb GI bill was that $1,200 just a gift I gave the Air Force? Is there a chance of getting any of it back since I haven't tapped any GI bill money yet?

My step-dad is in the Navy Reserve right now. He has 11 years active duty under his belt and at least 6 years of reserves to include another year active duty that he was called up for 2 years ago. I am 28 years old, would I qualify for the new GI Bill?
If not, are there other assistance programs that would be available to me as one of his children?

Just took this survey regarding "proposed changes to the MGIB." Seems the survey is a day late and a $ short, but I guess that's par for the course.

I'm glad it got signed, but for full disclosure keep in mind Bush had said repeatedly he'd veto it because it cost too much and would hurt retention. Same reason McCain was against it.
Maybe I read the vote tallys wrong but I thought Bush backed down after he saw it going through house and senate with veto-proof majorities.
Webb has always been a personal hero, this just elevated his ranking that much more.

I've read in at least one article in the NW Daily News from their military columnist that the transferability feature will only apply to those who are in the reserves or on active duty as of August 2009. Sounds like transfering it to your spouse of children won't be an option for those like myself who paid $1,200, served 20 years+ AD, did numerous OEF/OIF deployments and retired before that date.
I've written, yes actually written, both President Bush and Senator Webb, but unfortunately I just received generic replies from both after requesting they please take into consideration veterans who retired before the bill was signed.
Hopefully my data is bad and it will apply to all, but my fear is it won't...it's got to have a cut off date in there somewhere, and Aug of 2009 looks likely.
