The way i understand it... you don't get housing/BAH, books, etc. if you "transfer" to your spouse/kids... only the Military member is able to get that benefit if they are 75% of a full time student or more.

Don't know, might be a little cheaper next year, but I'll wager that the price of that Type check/ATP will be somewhere pretty close to $2000. It will be worth every penny.

Overall, looks like good news, even for us old retired farts

So in 2004 I paid $1,200 to the Air Force to qualify for my Montgomery GI bill. Now that I qualify for the Webb GI bill was that $1,200 just a gift I gave the Air Force? Is there a chance of getting any of it back since I haven't tapped any GI bill money yet?

I understand you get the $1200 back in your last check...provided you use all the money in the program.

My step-dad is in the Navy Reserve right now. He has 11 years active duty under his belt and at least 6 years of reserves to include another year active duty that he was called up for 2 years ago. I am 28 years old, would I qualify for the new GI Bill?

If not, are there other assistance programs that would be available to me as one of his children?

What if you don't have children or they won't be college-aged before it expires. Any chance you can pass it to nieces/nephews?

Just took this survey regarding "proposed changes to the MGIB." Seems the survey is a day late and a $ short, but I guess that's par for the course.

Maybe I read the vote tallys wrong but I thought Bush backed down after he saw it going through house and senate with veto-proof majorities.

Webb has always been a personal hero, this just elevated his ranking that much more.
Well, then follow up on full disclosure <g> and assume Sen Warner went up in your stock as well ? The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act (S 22), though introduced by Senator Jim Webb (D-VA), and added into the Senate's 2008 Supplemental Appropriations bill back in May, was co-sponsored by Virginia’s other Senator, John Warner (R-VA), as well as 56 other Senators. Clearly, a joint effort of both parties and not just Sen Webb.

I've read in at least one article in the NW Daily News from their military columnist that the transferability feature will only apply to those who are in the reserves or on active duty as of August 2009. Sounds like transfering it to your spouse of children won't be an option for those like myself who paid $1,200, served 20 years+ AD, did numerous OEF/OIF deployments and retired before that date.

I've written, yes actually written, both President Bush and Senator Webb, but unfortunately I just received generic replies from both after requesting they please take into consideration veterans who retired before the bill was signed.

Hopefully my data is bad and it will apply to all, but my fear is it won't...it's got to have a cut off date in there somewhere, and Aug of 2009 looks likely.
