Sputnik,
Did you ever get any further guidance on this? My pre-tax income is a little higher 4800 but I'm also a little older 49. We have one year to sign up for the SBP before we lose the benefit.
My understanding is that the SBP payments stop at 70?
I'm deployed right now but will get further advice upon my return.

Still got a few more years till I retire so haven't looked too intensively. I'll give it a more thorough look as I get closer, but as of now I plan on taking it.
No expert, but from what I can tell the payments stop at 70--with 30 years of payments. In my case, I'll be a little older before I hit 30 years of payments.

Interesting "corporate culture" behind SBP, too. For whatever reason, USA and USAF folks seem more inclined to take SBP, USN not so much.
I'm retired USN and declined it. Carry other types of life insurance plus the federal LTC coverage. SBP just seemed too expensive for what it provided. But, each situation is different.

My decision to take full SBP was based on my belief that the retirement pension isn't mine but ours. While I was living my dream flying jets for 27 years, she raised three boys while volunteering for countless squadron, group, and wing spouse functions/duties. She handled all finances so my TDY’s, deployments, and remote left me free to concentrate on my job. Not once in all those separations did I get a call, letter, email, etc burdening me with a home front issue/crisis. She just took care of her end of our Air Force experience. On top of all this, she put her career plans on hold while we PCS’d 10 times including 3 overseas assignments. While SBP may not be the best value from a purely financial perspective, I have great pride and peace of mind knowing she’ll be compensated for her service to the USAF for the rest of her life. She most definitely earned it!
