FLY6584,
can you go into more detail on your "best of both worlds" idea?
How is it more beneficial to fly for the reserve/guard and have an airline job at the same time? Are there any cons in that method?

Pros: Early in your airline career you have "furlough insurance" (someplace to make the mortgage, plan on being furloughed) and can make a little extra $ during the first few low paying years.
Cons: No retirement check/medical benefits until you are 60, and that's if you finish 20 good years. Most don't. Plan on missing a lot of important events in your kids life. I retired just as mine left for college.

Good insight. Obviously, every situation is different and a different fit for you and your families' situation. If I could have done it all over again, I would stay military for 20, get that health care and furlough "insurance" paycheck, and THEN get hired by the airlines/cargo carriers. Of course, you are a bit older, but you don't have two full time jobs (airlines/guard-reserve). But again, whatever is right for you, is RIGHT.
