Default new 9/11 GI bill?

Anyone know how the new GI bill will address flight training? I have 20 years in the Navy and have gotten my PPL. My intention is to get all of my ratings so I am wondering if I should hold off till August when the new GI bill kicks in if it will pay for my other ratings.

Thanks

I used my GI BIll to earn all ratings after my PPL. You currently qualify under the old rules, but may be out of the 10 year window since your separation.

If you are within 10 years since separation: Find a 141 approved school right now, and get started. The old program pays 60% of your costs under the approved school 141 syllabus. I don;t quite know what the new program will cover, but as I understand it possibly up to 100% (the way it should be).

Either way, when the new program rolls out this spring, your GI Bill will be for the full ballance, as if you never used any education money - including if you used the maximum ammount under the old program.

*** When you call a school to find out if they are approved... just ask if they are a "VA 141 school." If they dont know what you are saying, they are not one - the program is difficult to get approved for the FBO, so once they get it THEY ARE SURE OF IT and recruit qualified students.

Thanks for the reply. I was an idiot 20 years ago and didn't get the mongomery G.I. bill. I am still active duty right now. The new 9/11 G.I. bill, everyone gets so I am trying to see if it will cover flight training.

My understanding is that the new MGIB will NOT cover flight training of any sort, or ANY other votech training (trucking, welding, etc). Congress decided to focus on higher education vice job skills.

Does anyone have a different read on this?

The old GI MGIB can still be used for flight training by those eligible.

The way I read the GI Bill website, it will cover Flight Training and VOTECH only if it is part of a college program. Say like a Associates in Professional Pilot from a college with an aviation program. It will not cover your basic VA approved 141 FBO/Flight School.

Really? So if you already used the $36,000 on an undergrad you can use the new program for Grad School?

That's how I understand it too -- unless you were eligible under the old program and transfer.

From the VA pamphlet: If you transferred to the Post-9/11 GI Bill from the Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty, Montgomery GI Bill – Selected Reserves, or the Reserve Education Assistance Program, you may also receive Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits for flight training, apprenticeship or on-the-job training programs, and correspondence courses.

Is there a source for this? I talked to a college adviser and a VA programs adviser and they both were under the impression that you could only get benefits for the unused portion of the previous GI Bill -- although neither seemed to sure about it.

Right now there is alot of confusion even in the VA. Best bet is to check:
https://www.gibill2.va.gov/vba/vba.c...1.17&p_cats=17

There are a lot of FAQ's in there. And the closer August comes, there may be more changes. And even after then, it may be a nutroll until all of VA gets on the same sheet of music.

And here is another kicker to all the confusion. EACH OF THE SERVICES can apply different rules (ie separate rules) for members or former members of their service. In other words, if you are a Marine or a Marine veteran, you may have different rules than Army soldiers or Army veterans. NOTE: Veterans will be subject to the rules of the Service they served in. For those in that served in more than one branch---it will be the one on your last DD Form 214 Discharge.
This will be confused long after August.
