Well...here's my side of this so far...

I applied at the end of January for the "Temp Recall" with all the supporting documentation except the physical (that takes the longest). When I sent in my application, I clearly stated that the only assignment I was applying for is an E-3 to Tinker ( no judging:)) I use to fly it and I live in Norman, OK. I'm currently furloughed, however, if they don't offer me the E-3...I'll continue to be a stay at home dad, not a problem. I'm still waiting for my physical to be electronically sent to AFPC (I was told by the end of this week) Anyways, I'll let everyone know what happens.

How long have you been out? I have been out less than 6 months. My physical actually is not expired but getting a new one next week. All other paperwork is in. Did they give you a time frame for an answer or just play the waiting came?

I'm looking for some inputs from other people, just some thoughts to add would be appreciated....New C-130 Co with a guard unit that is about to lose all the aircraft to the BRAC and a uncertain future from there. I'm thinking a couple years active to help ride out the current down turn and add to the 1000hrs (mostly single engine piston) would be nice. I have 7 yrs TIS but another 1.5 until becomeing eligible for Capt. As a younger guy in a squadron would I be more prone to getting crappy assignments or the dreaded TDY to the waterless beach?? Thanks for your time

cficpilot,

I've been out since Sep 07. They told me once the physical paperwork is routed to AFPC it'll be around 60 days until on Active Duty. That includes 14 days to sign the acceptance paperwork, the amount of time you required on AF125, PCS move if necessary...etc. What did you apply for?

I'm not a Herc guy but I'll take a shot. You'll be treated just like everyone else...i.e. yeah you'll spend plenty o' time in the desert.

Pretty sure this program doesn't apply to you though (not retired or separated). You would just be coming on Active duty for x period of time. Back in the day I knew a few reservists that came on active duty to go fly a Tweet tour. Crappy locations but good hours.

Like anything else, you won't know till you ask. Give AFPC a call.

I applied for MacDill. First to fly then rated staff. They were going to send in my "current physical" since it is less then a year old and I am going to get a new one next week. Not sure how long to expect before I hear something from them. I know they say goal 60 days from completed paperwork.
Will keep this thread up to date on my progress. Good Luck.

Just curious, what is the driving factor for you guys who want to come back to AD?

Even though I submitted my paperwork I'm still torn between returning to AD and just being a stay at home dad until recalled. I truly enjoy being a "civilian", however, I have a wife and 2 young kids to provide for...which means "sacrifice"

Military Pros:
100k/year (paid every 1st/15th month)...much better than 1st/2nd/3rd year pay at CAL...
Stability for 4 years...who knows with the civilian sector right now
If given the assignment I want...I don't have to relocate the family
Accrue longevity and seniority once recalled, hopefully returning to year 4-5 pay and a better contract

Military Cons:
Deployments (possibly 2-3...4 month deployments during the 3-4 year tour)
Paperwork
Office politics

Ok probably too much information...but here's a short answer:
Money and Job Security...knowing I'll have a job in the civilian sector when I'm done helps!

I can understand where you are coming from. I am 100% set on leaving AD next summer, for the reasons you listed above, but I am not committed to trying to find a flying job and will do something else if that is what need be done. I hope those who apply get something worth while instead of just 179s to the desert.

Many of the same reasons WarE stated. Plus gives me options. Since looking at a furlough for sometime it will bridge the gap until I get a call back. Depending on what you think the economy will do it may actually be a very good option plus adding to your retirment pay on the back end. This economy may actually get worse and having a government job will be be more stable. A year ago this is probably the last thing I would think that I would be trying to come back on active duty.
