Farewell To The USS Kitty Hawk

If it hadn't been for that disaster at work today, I would have loved to visit this ship also.

Wondering if any APC user served on her? Any memories to share?

I couldn't get the Seattle video to load - "other side of the world" issues, I guess.
Here's another video of her arriving Freemantle - loaded for bear.
YouTube - USS Kitty Hawk
She was in SLEP when I first got hired at Piedmont. We'd drive past her going from PHL to the hotel in Essington; she had that big "63" on her island lit up (even though she was being worked on).
Begin rant:
News5:
Vagabond, would you mind calling that reporter and reminding her that ships are "she's" - at least in the western hemisphere? Nothing sexist about it - it's a high compliment.
End rant
Was the "disaster" the Boeing announcement of layoffs? I'm sorry. My son is going through that over at Cessna.

January 29th, 2009 - Nearly a thousand former crew members gathered in Bremerton to say farewell to the USS Kitty Hawk. KING 5's Linda Brill joined them, as the Navy opened the ship for a final tour before it is decommissioned.

Served aboard USS Kitty Hawk from 02-05 while flying with VFA-195/CVW-5. Contrary to popular belief she really did have a forward and an aft escalator(yes just like the department stores) and sometimes they even worked.

I made my nugget cruise on the Kitty Hawk in 1994 flying F-14As with the Screaming Eagles of VF-51/CVW15. My log book shows I have 176 traps on her. Two things I'll always remember about the Kitty Hawk: Watching my roomate hit the ramp on an attempt at his 11th night trap ever and the run out of the 4-wire at night. It always felt like you were going off the angle on the run out and I'd swear my feet were hanging off the end when I finally stopped!

As an AF guy I had the privelege of going to some meetings aboard ship when she was in port at Yokuska, Japan. I will never understand how two O-4's can share a room so small!!
Truly an Air Force appreciation visit!

If you think that's bad you should try 8 JO's in a room about 3 times the size of a 2-man state room. It is what it is, the 2-man staterooms are nice digs compared to some of the JO jungles out there.

I have a handful of traps on CV-63, mostly FRS CQ and whatnot. I remember sitting aft of the island watching others trap while waiting my turn to go when everything on the ship went dark. At first I thought they turned off the lens and landing area lights because we were turning downwind or something, but when I looked up at the tower and saw flashlight beams I figured something was amiss. A few minutes later, all the power came back on. Guess somebody leaned up against the Big Light Switch.
