How soon/late to apply to the airlines?
How much active duty time do people have remaining on orders when they apply to the airlines? What about AGR people? Are they flexible with class dates until you commitment is done? How soon is too early to apply? Thanks I still have quite a long time and have an RJ job already but was just curious.

It depends. Most applications ask you your availability date, so put that down and let them decide if it's too far out for them to consider you in a particular hiring wave.
Each situation may be different. If it's a continuous wave of hiring, then a specific availability date might not matter as much. If it's a short burst of hiring (as most lately seem to be), then you'd have a tougher shot right now getting hired for an airline needing to get folks through training this fall or winter if your availabilty isn't until next spring. Most hiring windows are set for a specific timeframe based on future needs and they tend not to hire too far out from those needs.
But I don't think it ever hurts to apply and leave those considerations up to the company.

Sort of, but not really. You have to be available at a time where there is actually a class going through. They don't do classes for one guy. If it means you slip a class or two (to another planned class) then they'll probably work with you. If you aren't available at all during the window that they are holding new-hire classes, then you are probably SOL.

Varies
Like mentioned above, it can't hurt to apply. I think most AD guys started applying about a year from separation. I did. You can't really be too early getting your ducks in a row. If you aren't available, they'll get you next time. Just be honest in your apps as to your availability.

I recommend sooner than later, just depends on current hiring trends when you apply. Unless specified, let the companies you apply to make that decision. I may be in the minority, but I applied approximately 12 months out and specified the date I was available. I also did as much networking as possible to stay in the “loop”. I interviewed and was offered a position with 6 months to go on AD. Your already on the right track by getting as much information to make the best decisions. Best of luck.

I started almost exactly 1 yr out, figuring I'd get my application in and then update it until hopefully getting an interview in 2011.
The day I put in my application w/DAL (and before any of my internals/externals even had a chance to send their recs in), I got the interview offer. At the interview, I got the "conditional job offer," and if the hiring continues as DAL expects, will retire next year just in time to drive to ATL. Obviously, the job offer could vaporize with a change w/the industry and economy, but it's infinitely better than a kick in the junk.
I'd advise you put your app in early and keep it updated.

Did you use any "headhunters" like FltOps.com, or did you apply directly to DAL?
Thanks
Thanks
