I came back to active duty under the RRORP in Aug. 09 with a 3 year commitment. I just found the following statement in an AF Times article from May '09..."Officers who take flying positions get three-year contracts plus time for aircraft training, with the option to extend to four years if commanders agree" Did anyone of y'all get offerred the optional 4th year or does that come as you approach the end of 3 years?? No luck so far contacting the recall office as of yet. Thanks.

 

In January, HAF and AFPC expect to release the policies and procedures for Recallees to request extensions. This per my contact at HAF/A1PP who writes the policy, though he wouldn't say what it will contain since it's still in coord.

 

According to Ms. Bazan, extensions could not be addressed until six to eight months out from the end of the contract; however, I would go with what Kuchiyo says since he is in a position to have updated information.

 

There are 5 of us in my squadron. One or two have open-ended orders with no end-date. At least one has the optional 4th year mentioned. Mine says three years with no mention of a fourth; I too have wondered if I could get it. When I asked the recall office (May time-frame), they weren't sure.

I would guess that like anything military, they can change their mind, and retroactively rescind your orders. Or, they could decide to offer it. I guess we'll see in January.

Slightly different spin on the question. I have been back on AD over a year now (previously retired),not flying, and have found I don't miss flying as much as I thought. Don't get me wrong I still enjoy flying and often pay for a flight here and there just to get back in the sky am considering changing career goals. I am working at a staff job and they are converting several of the rated positions to GS-12/13 positions. Has anyone tried to get out of their contract early to take one of these positions?

I'm thinking of staying with the govt paycheck, steady employment and hope to retire again with a second pension. I've asked the question on the AFPC website and gotten no response, I also tried calling and left messages with the same lack of response. Does anyone know if it is possible to re-retire earlier than the 3 years? I'd like to get one of the jobs coming available in the near future but don't want to apply if there is no chance I'll be released. I would be doing exactly the same thing as I'm doing now just not wearing a uniform so I would think that meets the "needs of the AF" especially since the job I'm currently filling is being converted to GS. Any thoughts of how I can find out? Thanks.

 

There is likely a comment on your EAD orders to the effect that you will serve to a particular date "unless sooner relieved." There are a couple guys already putting in re-retirement paperwork. It'll have to get approved by their chain and AFPC. If you're overseas, you'll also have to get a DEROS curtailment approved. I have no idea how likely it is to happen, and I expect it'll be case-by-case. But it's worth a shot, all they can say is "no."

I'll ask the question about early re-retirements (and extensions) next month when I meet with the HAF manning guys.

BTW, when looking at USAJobs, make sure to look for "Program Analyst." That's the generic position description for "staff officer." "Pilot" on USAJobs is for flying positions, not staff. And AMC tends to use "Air Transportation Manager" to describe their staff jobs.

 

Just my impression from talking with the AFPC folks, but with the "Force shaping" that is occurring right now, I don't think it would be much trouble to re-retire earlier than your contract stipulates. IMO only.

I have been looking at the program analyst jobs also since it seems that is where the converted rated jobs get put. Thanks for any info you can provide.
