Well, we all have our memories. If you don't think the F-15 was considered a large fighter, it's OK. We did. There's a reason why the Eagle guys stayed nose on as long as they could when entering the fight.

Same for comparing an A2G F-4 capability to a F-15E. I'd call it similar roles...but I'd stop there. For obvious reasons.

From my vantage point, I find it humorous to watch an F-4 and F-15 guy argue about who's airplane is too big.

38ft vs 43ft wingspan. Both around 50k lbs loaded? Does that sound right?

Depends on what they are loaded with.

But that isn't the point. Back when the 15 first started flying DACT, it was a common opinion that the jet was easily seen, particularly when turning...hence my comment about pure pursuit tactics.

Default Visual/Tally Ho

Of course the F-4 was tough to see with the long black twin pointers leading right to the can unless the burners were lit. Sarcasm off.

One in burner and one @ idle 20 NM prior to the merge. Of course when we got the F-4J/S it was no longer a problem.

Hmm I would think the T1 would be a great lead in platform for the Buff. (Unless they still have ACE in -38s). We J model 130 guys have our stud fly T1s now. A vast improvement over the T44/C12 product, IMO. As an IP who has flown with studs from -38s/T1s and T44s...the 38 studs have better SA the T1 guys, better inst flying skills, and the T44 guys.....umm.......they have.......They can fly the hell out of an engine out no rmi card ASR!!!

There are good pilots out there that came from T44s and there are guys who mysteriously made it through T38s..but overall I don't think the AF is happy with the T44 "product"

Yeah, we did "Navy Burner" too. You still had to "do something" to cut the smoke trail. I preferred min burner in both engines (gas permitting). More energy/mach and no problems with spool up/getting a light on the other burner at the merge. I defintely agree the later model "smokeless engines" were one of the best improvements ever made to the old Rhino. Even without the smoke, the Rhino was not that hard to see unless nose on.

Like I said, listening to Eagle guys and Phantom guys argue about who's airplane is too big makes me laugh. I always think about these pictures:

I'm the supporting Viper pitching in from 4 miles away while my wingman is turning with an Eagle. If I didn't know that my wingman was there I would have thought I was rolling in on a lone Eagle doing an AHC ride.

or

Back when Spang had mixed Viper/Weasel elements, I can't tell you how many times we rolled up behind the Weasel...and were killed by his invisible Viper wingman. I always hated merging with a grey F-4 that DIDN'T smoke (by 1990, only German F-4's smoked), because that usually meant there was an untargeted Viper winman close by.
